Well there is the fact that their launch isn't tied to the Holidays so if Zelda misses by only a small window, occupying the May window Nintendo has used recently every year, it won't be a massive failure.  In other cases where launch coincides with Holidays, missin by a few months would plant the game squarely in the January and February wasteland.  IF the new Mario is a true Launch title, I could see Zelda occupying that May slot for breathing room.  Though I am MORE interested on what will come in alongside those major pillars.

It does worry me that not having BotW as a launch title could seriously hurt Switch. Wii U and GCN lacked compelling killer apps at launch, and they never really recovered. Meanwhile, every Nintendo console with at least one killer launch title (NES, SNES, N64, Wii) did at least moderately well.

3D Mario should be one of those killer apps like Mario 64. Then you also got Splatoon that can potentially keep at least Japan intrigued as the original game basically kept the Wii U afloat in Japan and has one of the best legs in Japan (and possibly worldwide). Switch is a new console and I'm sure there are fans of Splatoon that will buy an improved version or a sequel. Again we'll have to see since all we're going at are rumors. I'm just not in the mind set that it's Zelda or bust. It's not just about getting off to a good start, but also staying afloat with a great lineup of games that releases over the course of the year.
