I find it surprising.

The day before the Switch reveal trailer, Tom Phillips from Eurogamer posted this on twitter:

I find it kind of hard to believe that a Nintendo game that wasn't running well on September can be ready to launch for March.

It doesnt say it didnt run well. It said, it didnt run perfectly. Big difference.

Most games are polished the last months before release, that's what they do the time running up towards release.

Semantics. The difference isn't big .

The thing is that if Mario wasn't running as they wanted in September, they're still a long way to go.

Oops you did it it again. You played wit his heart, and got lost in the game.

Quit playing games with his heart.

He doesn't wanna be a fool for you. Just another player in your game for two. You may hate him, but it aint no lie. Baby, bye bye bye.

If it's more Mario 64 than 3D World then that should be enough for launch.

Yeah, another underwhelming entry like 3D World won't get them off to a good start, but if it's more along the lines of the series greats (64 and Galaxy) it could be a strong launch title. Not as strong as Breath of the Wild would have been, but better than NSMBU/Nintendoland.

Well there is the fact that their launch isn't tied to the Holidays so if Zelda misses by only a small window, occupying the May window Nintendo has used recently every year, it won't be a massive failure.  In other cases where launch coincides with Holidays, missin by a few months would plant the game squarely in the January and February wasteland.  IF the new Mario is a true Launch title, I could see Zelda occupying that May slot for breathing room.  Though I am MORE interested on what will come in alongside those major pillars.

It does worry me that not having BotW as a launch title could seriously hurt Switch. Wii U and GCN lacked compelling killer apps at launch, and they never really recovered. Meanwhile, every Nintendo console with at least one killer launch title (NES, SNES, N64, Wii) did at least moderately well.

I think a great 3D Mario with some originality would be a great start (and the mexican Day of the Dead town shows good signs IMO).  And if Zelda is within striking distance could work.  And of course, launching in March means they have time to accumulate a strong library before their first Holiday where they can use bundling to help maintain and build momentum.

Let's hope. They cannot afford to let Switch limp out of the gate like Wii U and GCN. This is make or break time, go big or go home.
