#34 Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King

The first and so far only game in this series that I've ever played. One of the largest RPG's on the PS2, with a massive, intricately designed world filled with secrets and cool locations. This is the game that put Level-5 on the map for me, and proved they were among the best developers in Japan. I love how this game manages to successfully combine the old-school aspects of the series with more moderns designs sensibilities. I'm very much looking forward to Dragon Quest XI next year, and this game is a large part of that. It's one of my favourite RPG's of all time, and I'm well overdue for a replay at some point in the near future.

34 – Pharaoh


In the 90s Sierra launched the City Building series that could be described as “Sim City set in a historical civilization”, with the first game in the series, Caesar, set in Rome, released in 1992. After Roman Empire, the next set in the city building series was the Ancient Egypt, with Pharaoh (1999).

Although the similarities with SimCity are evident (you have to build a city and provide services to your citizens in order to increase population, collect taxes, etc…) the game has some differences beyond the historical setting including features that approach the game to the strategy genre like a basic military management, a strong focus on commerce and resource production, foreign enemies and missions, that distance the game from the more pure “city simulation” of SimCity. Housing evolution system also differs from SimCity since the level of the houses built in a place will evolve depending on its location and the services provided.

While SimCity was truly innovative and many people will prefer its approach to city management, the strategic components of the City Building series give them enough personality and are enjoyable by themselves.

I would have guessed Stranglehold based on hint 1. But not with the extra hints :P.

36 isn't Sly Cooper though. The profession deals with saving lives.

Ok, So 34 is Baldur's Gate II (I was tempted to put it first, but I felt more natural to try with the first game first...)

Prince of Persia as guessed by Entropio

An old game that was re-released on almost every platform under the sun. I played the Macintosh version mostly of 'Prince of Persia' on our Apple Performa 630, our very first home computer, and later the PowerMac 5500. Unknown to me at the time, this meant I was actually playing the better version of the game with higher resolution sprites and a overhauled graphic design. The prince actually looked like a Persian prince here.

The player has to make his way through the dungeons and the halls of the palace towards the chamber of Jaffar, the Grand Vizier who has imprisoned the princess in a bid to take power over the kingdom. This is the main hook of the game, the princess will die in 60 minutes because Jaffar will kill her if she doesn't marry him, which of course, she doesn't. Which makes the game very hard because after that one hour it's game over. And this is not really that short of a game either, basically requiring the player to speedrun from the start. A case of massive trail and error.

At one point in the game, the player is halted by a big mirror that's impossible to break. In one of the most embarrassing moments of my (and my parent's) gaming life, it took us, literally, years to figure out what to do. This wasn't the age where you could just casually look up a walkthrough on the internet, mind. As it turned out, all you had to do was, jump through it...
