looks like it's tracking 20m ahead of the PS3 at this point and the PS3 reached the same volume of shipments 15month after the PS4 did
I would like to see a chart like this one, after feb next year.
Just to see if its still tracking ahead of the PS2.

Overshipped? No.
Shippments were actually down by 100k from the similar quater last year. This shows they are actually undershipping especially when you consider what their FY target was and still is.
And dont forget that the slim was onky available for 2 weeks in September. And those big deals you mention for the slim aren't indicative of it not selling well. That's exactly what the slim is there for. To have ridiculous deals and sell as many as possible especially in this time of the year. Just want and notice how there probably wouldn't be a single deal for the PS4pro.
And don't forget that the pro was also announced and is just days away. What this does is that right now there will be more used PS4s on the market than ever before. As a lot of early PS4 adopters will be trading their consoles in in anticipation for the PS4pro (I am one). Those used consoles will be even cheaper than the slim, so that will also result in a slight slowdown in sales.
Just wait till the end of December, then all these things and factors will become clear.

Okay, I didn't say that it's overshipped, I said that it could be!
Anyway, I could add tho this, that I find suspicious the fact that the last sales update from sony was on late MAY... ( 40m ) Last year, they were more vocal about sales.
They could just want to publcize a sales figure when it hits the 50m milestone, though.

It will dedinitely be ahead of the PS2 again by febuary next year. thats the 39th month, The PS2 was at around 50-52M then. The PS4 will be at at least 54-55M at the same point.
But by around Aug/Sept next year the PS4 will be behind the PS2 again tho, only so much you can do when still over $100 more expensive.

Its about the milestones. They arent gonna announce sales every time they sell 5M consoles. Announcing 50/60/70/80M just sounds better.
So far their trend has been like this, in the odd press event or press release they announce incremental milestones. At the start of every year (usually first week of January) the announce LTD sell through numbers.
