I used a 5m extension which I logged with me through my whole flat. But then I grew some balls and got me wireless headphones.

I just use Bluetooth. =P

That's really easy, I don't own any speakers.
But if I had any and my soundcard driver can't do automatic switches between sources then I'd get myself an audio switch.

Simple, I turn the headphones off, switches to speakers automatically.

I have an extension running to the 2.1 system, there's a jack in the volume control on my desk, plugging in the headphones mutes the speaklers automatically. I can also plug it into a USB adapter with a built-in soundcard and connect it to the front of my PC tower, that way I can have 7.1 surround in my headphones, which is neat for gaming.
