Well... no, you see while the media player for just "files from usb sticks" is awful, it has a ton of other ways to watch media, the youtube app is fantastic, Netflix is so nicely layed out at 1080p TV size anyway and opens in seconds from booting the console, the WWE network offers perfect quality through the app too for main events, music wise Spotify is baked into the UI of the PS4 for playing songs during gameplay, even with a free account you can add all the songs you love and listen to them in games (you'll get around 2 mins of adverts per 20 mins of songs)

Oh Crunchyroll is on the ps4 too, if you've never used that, fantastic Anime streaming applet, and Plex is also available for the PS4 now if you have any experience using Plex in your home the PS4 will add itself to your network without any hassle and find all of your shared videos to play on the system.

It's just that media player for mp4s from usb... it just doesn't really do the job.

Mhmm thanks for your insights as always!

No problemo, I really love the PS4, but that doesn't mean the system is without faults :D

As we know, the PS4 Pro is just around the corner, and I have my sites on it.  I've been doing a little research, and it seems that the PS4 cannot store media such as pictures and music on its HDD.  The system can only playback these files if it serves as a media server such as a PC or an external source such as a flash drive.  I personally love having my audio ripped to my PS3 and would like to do the same with the PS4.  Is there a legit reason why Sony is not allowing the storage of these media on the PS4 HDD?

Oh well there is one massive reason you can't rip your music from CD's into the PS4's HDD.... it can't play Music CDs at all, like... if you put a audio CD in there it just spins up for a second and does nothing with it. But yeah I remember you could just fill a usb stick with mp3s and copy them all onto the PS3 HDD for storage.

That said though... the PS3 could not play Audio from the HDD during all games, I still remember laughing our ass's off in a mates place because every time we finished a game of Street Fighter 4 the PS3 would restart the MP3 that he had put going before we started to play our rounds, but in game the audio playback would stop and restart again on returning to the menu for a minute... think we heard the start of "back in the new york groove" about 100 times that night lol. The ps4 on the other hand can have spotify running during all games, and it has a very nice volume slider to adjust so you can get a perfect mix between in game SFX of cars in driveclub and your own custom soundtracks.

Oh... there is one time the PS4 can't have music playing! When remote playing to the Vita, it does not allow you stream Spotify to the Vita from the console.

Just grab a PC

Something to do with security reasons i think? I know that Bethesda couldn't get mods on PS4 because of Sonys propitiatory formats the PS4 requires.

if you have a smart TV, it'll have a usb port, you can just stick in an external hdd, or a flash drive to watch your movies, pictures or w/e, it can even do that wireless.

See. That's the kind of comment I respect. We all love our consoles and have our favorite companies but sometimes, we get blinded.

It is really sad how bad the PS4 is for pictures and videos. I really wish Sony would loosen the regulations on downloading and veiwing files. I would love to be able to view and download pdf files for banking, and upload/download family videos and photos on Play Memories.

I would love to see Firefox and VLC Player come to PS4 and PS4 Pro. If Sony is serious about changing peoples view on consoles, then they have to change their ways. PSVR and PSVR are not going to have an iPhone like effect like they want if they keep up this overly controlling position. The controlled ecosystem is great for keeping the system secure, and delivering quality content, but going to overboard cripples the system.

One of my greatest joys last gen was using my PS4 browser to download movies, mp3s, images, and animated themes via the browser. If they were going to allow this, I'm sure we'd have it by now but really hope they bring it back. PS3 only did everything.

Yeah oddly my Sony Home theater system in my basement plays all files..

however my PS4 in the Guest Bedroom does not :(

Odd...

With so little memory (it goes fast), you don't want to store any thing but games on it, anyway. I just hate that it doesn't recognize my external HDD. I have a bazillion movies on it and the Xbox One's fast forward sucks. PS3 is still my go to system for watching video from a hard drive.

PS4's media player does recognize my thumb drive but whether it plays my content is a crap shoot. I'm hoping for a programming upgrade because I'm getting a new 4k TV this week-- but if the TV plays video the way that I think it will, I won't even need to use the media player on any of my consoles.

Might be an idea to get a Plex account. my mate has one and he has set it up on a local 6TB server in his home. it pays everything and it's very fast.
