Forums - Nintendo - Rumor-Nintendo Switch Game Cards Limited To 16GB Maximum Size

Back in PlayStation 1 days third party's rejected N64 because cartilage was too small and was expensive. Including patches today's games exceed 40-50 GB limit. They might say goodbye to their third party support because of this.

16 GB is not the maximum size, though. According to the tweet, 16 GB is actually the standard size, so there's a good chance that they have bigger cartridge sizes like 32 GB.

Apparently it's been so long since consoles have used cartridges / game cards that people have forgotten that their "standard" storage capacity isn't universal the way CDs / DVDs / Blu-Rays are.

Mario 64, an N64 launch title for example, was a 64 megabit cartridge (8MB), which was the "standard" size at the time.  As the need for more storage capacity grew for larger / more complex games, the capacity of 64 carts grew all the way up to 512 megabits (64MB) for games like RE2 and Conker's Bad Fur day by the end of the console's life.

While 16GB might be the "standard" size for most NS games at launch, Nintendo and game card manufacturers can easily utilize larger capacity cards for bigger games as necessary.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Really funny how a Nintendo fansite can get such a thing so wrong, even worse if they deliberately did this "mistake" to get more clicks. Every Nintendo card based system starting with Famicom and Gameboy, to the most recent 3DS had varying card storage capacities, that went up considerably as time went on within the same system generation. Something every informed gamer should know and especially a news fansite dedicated to Nintendo should know. On top of this the tweet the article is based on, didn´t say it was the max. capacity, way to jump to wrong conclusions.

Didn't knew 32 GB is bigger than 40-50+ GB. 😛 32GB is enough for third party indie developers. If you are talking about bigger ones then it's tiny.

Sorry spurgeon.

The quoted article specifies 16GB as the standard cart size. Meaning small to moderate games won't use carts larger than 16GB. There is no reason that there wouldn't be a wide variety of cart sizes to match projects (as was always the case on all of Nintendo's cart-based systems (NES - 3DS).

Huge assumption, Takashi Mochizuki said it seems that standard size will be around 16GB not max size, that's huge difference. 16GB cant be maximum size beacuse even some Nintendo Wii U games are bigger than 16GB, XBX is around 23GB.
3DS also has standard size, but has much bigger sizes of cartridges.

With how big games are getting, 16 is no where near enough. Hopefully they also have larger size carts available too.

I believe they do. The Tweet said that 16 gigabytes was the standard size, not the maximum size like the article says.

Yeah, I figure that's the case. Though, 16 gbs is still small for a standard size, considering game sizes these days.

Would 128GB be out of the question?

In time, no.

It will be cheaper to use 2 x 64GB or 4 x 32GB than a single 128GB for a while yet though.
