Ithink you also need to take into consideration how the PS2 gen didn't require you to buy a new TV or have the internet. The PS3 gen brought with it a huge set of expenses from HD discs, HD TVs and online gaming.

Secondly, the PS2 dragged on abit longer due to the amount of people not being able to afford the leap due to console and TV costs. I personally didn't buy a PS3 until I got my full HD TV (after LBP launched). This meant that for many people, the gen didn't really start until 2-3 years into it. Technically it's obviously false, but for a large number of people it isn't.

I know they weren't necessary but you were often told that to truly experience the PS3 you needed a HDTV. I suppose people feel similar about the PS4Pro and 4K TVs. 

I'm not saying this is the only reason, but for many it was an additional reason not to jump in early. 

Nice write up, you say the ps3 was the most expensive console launch. Was the Neo Geo not considered a major console launch? I remember that being quite expensive as it was like having an arcade in your house.

What's impact is the Pro/Scorpio going to have on this generation?

The biggest reason for the longevity of the last console gen was that the leap from SD to HD home consoles was so huge in terms of graphics that the PS3 and 360 were able to outlast the typical 5 year console cycle, as by 2010/2011 there wasn't a big enough leap in graphics to warrant brand new hardware @ around $400 presumably.

Plus, the 7th gen was also the first generation where all major consoles were fully online capable right out of the box, which allowed them to receive constant software/firmware updates that helped add to their longevity as they kept receiving new features that weren't available at launch.
