Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Calls Scorpio “The Only Console” Capable Of “True 4K” and “Hi-Fidelity VR”

the Xbox scorpio will cost 500-600€ + the Occolust rift which is 800€. I doubt developers will bother making VR games at all for this expensive combo for such an infant technology. And if MS would be serious about VR we would have seen at least some support for occulist rift on the current Xbox One, why making it exclusive for the Scorpio? Looks more more like a brand new next gen console to me than actually an upgraded Xbox One.

Yep... MS bad choice affects nothing in the end but if Sony pushes 4K the wrong way it can certainly have a worse effect... but I like their approach for checkerboard, where they go for 1080p or 1440p when possible and for very little effort on devs and system it upscale for 4k, it probably won't have a bad effect on the games.

This checkerboard thing doesn't sound much different than the temporal effects currently implemented in games.

Frankly, I like it. You get a better presentation with less resources. Titanfall 2 on X1 look very polished even at 720p thanks to these kind of effects.

The theory is similar, but done on a much larger scale (and so by extension much more is involved in producing the end result). The closest existing console example we have is Killzone: Shadow Fall's multiplayer. Sony's checkerboard 4k process seems to be a further developed version of that (and hopefully lathering your image with motion blur will remain a GG niche opinion :p).

I personally wish the Pro and Scorpio's places were switch (i'm happy to pay for a premium device, but my PC makes the Scorpio redundant), but i agree checkboard 4k is at least an acceptable compromise. Depending how it progresses over the next few years, i could totally see the XB2/PS5 opting for it over native renders, and focusing that power on graphics/performance. It could help to buff what is, thanks to the Pro and Scorpio, going to seem like quite a lacklustre generation jump.

I think the best way for Scorpio to garner VR game support is by being PC compatible, as there are hundreds/thousends of small projects that don't need much processing power, but the devs probably don't have time/money for a console port.

But knowing MS that will probably be exclusively possible for games that use the universal windows platform and are sold from their own store which limits the amount of titles tremendously.

To feed their 6TF GPU MS really should have something better in there than overcocked Jaguar cores, but like Cerny outlined that might lose them the 0-effort-0-problems 100% Xbox One compatibility of all older titles (unless they assemble a big team that patches all the available titles somehow). I'm very interested if they went with a Zen-based design here and make this a bit of a half-next-gen console with limited backwardscompatibility or if they kept the Jaguar for compatility issues after all.

Is this the end of PS4?

Not a fan of hyperboles... But I have to agree that at least one major selling point of the PS4 line, namley the best console to play 3rd party games will be lost to Scorpio.

Are you implying that the Scorpio will taking over PS4 for big 3rd party support?  Because that wont happen.

PS4 has the biggest userbase that no 3rd party dev will ignore.  Realistically, the Scorpio will be a console with wasted power.  3rd party wont spend the extra time and budget to utilize the Scorpio/smaller userbase, they'd rather just do the bare minimum and that would be to utilize it for the PS4 Pro at best since they're bigger.  Likely, the only games that will utilize the Scorpio's power is just a small handful MS own 1st party games, not 3rd party.

It will have the graphically, be it framrate, resolution, effects, best performing 3rd party multiplatform games compared to any other console next year.

PS4Pro plays certain games at native 4K, so it just shows that Microsoft doesn't research.

I'm sure they do their research, which leaves us with only one conclusion ...

The PS5 Exists.

"The Cell is a thousand times faster than any other chip! Please buy a PS3."

Console marketing business as usual. But interesting that so many people who never had the slightest interest to buy a MS console anyway talk about it
