Soundwave said: No I think they will just wait for 10nm or 7nm tech -- in layman's terms, that means Nvidia will eventually be able to offer Nintendo a smaller/cooler version of the same chip, which Nintendo in turn will be able to make a smaller "Pocket Switch" with. That will basically be curtains for the 3DS/DS brand then I think. |
For once we totally agree :P
For now, Nintendo is promoting the Switch as a home console that is easily and conveniently portable, but still a home console. I think they are biding time for the custom chipset to be smaller and cheaper so that they can have a Switch Mini or something taht will be a full featured Switch but with a smalller screen and then they will transition their handheld studios to the Switch. Which is why they have started to blend their teams together across the platforms, to give their handheld studios practice and experience I think so the switch can be made smoothly.
Could be wrong, depends on how Nintendo wants to play this. They could try one more round with handhelds, but the Switch makes it an unpredictable scenario, though if they are patient enough they could have a cheaper, marginally weaker version of their custom Nvidia chip ready for it and have a handheld that is similar to the Switch but separate, but I think a Switch Mini will be the "handheld" eventually myself.
