PlayStation Network data dump reveals extent of PSN issues

PSN down is a phrase we've heard regularly over the past year or so. This data shows the extent of the PlayStation Network issues.

By Simon Sayers on 19 October 2016

Before we begin, let’s make something clear. The following PlayStation Network data dump refers to the U.S. only, but does reveal the extent of the PSN downtime over the last fifteen months, showcasing its instability.

The following data was apparently mined by Reddit user ton2010. He says:

“I keep logs of the bot's activities and wanted to do something special with a full year's worth of PSN Status data, but life/work kept getting in the way.”

He’s revealed his findings from data mined from the official PlayStation Network status page in the U.S.

PSN down over 70 times in last 15 months

According to him, the bot checks the PSN status every minute. The data he’s discovered also takes into account that it’s possible that only one service was effected rather than the whole PSN being down on a particular day.

Here’s the full dump. The word "intermittent" refers to any time that one or more services on the PlayStation Network were down.

What it shows is that the PlayStation Network has suffered issues, where users weren’t able to access some services, over 70 times since July 2015.This does include scheduled maintenance, but it also puts into context the amount of downtime there’s been for PS4 players.

Apart from the odd DDoS attack, there's rarely an explanation from Sony as to why the PSN servers appear to suffer problems on a weekly basis. Stay tuned though, because we have some very interesting data been given exclusively to us that compares PlayStation Network downtime with Xbox Live issues over the past year. Let's put this into context tomorrow, because it seems our friends at Microsoft are very much in the same boat.

Around the Network

Dat $60 per year sure is doing wonders /s

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

That's weird. It's never down for me.

Sounds like Xbox Live has the same problems just to apply context.

That money is for the PS+ games. You actually get a refund for the downtimes because PS+ is actually $100 per year.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Around the Network

So it goes down an average of once a week for most times for less than a hour if unscheduled.

To put it in context.

Same here. I play from Romania via a UK account and I did not notice issues like this before.

Same here. I think it was down once this year for me while I was on.  Which is a lot.

It did go down for me for a couple of hours a few months ago, but I haven't really noticed it much at all over the last few years (2014 was definitely worse, though). I guess "intermittent" really is "intermittent."

Intermittent problems so god knows how bad the problem is. I'm guessing minor problems because I can't remember the last PSN issue I had.
