Forums - Nintendo - Masuada says the mainline Pokemon games will remain on handhelds

For those who are hoping the mainline Pokemon games will have a crack on home consoles, you'll probably have to keep begging or hold back those hopes.

Junichi Masuda has reiterated that the mainline Pokémon games will remain on dedicated handhelds and won’t be shifting to mobile or traditional home console anytime soon. Masuda says that handheld consoles allow them to further achieve the vision they have had for the franchise since its inception.

“When coming up with the idea of Pokémon, what we really wanted to create was something where people could get together and have fun trading, battling, showing off their Pokémon collection, and just talking about their own adventures with the game. Handheld consoles and devices offer us the best way to achieve this vision.”

“We want Pokémon to be a means of communication. What I really want to do is to connect people, then help them form great memories by experiencing these distributions and such in certain places. I think of it like having a meal. By itself, a meal is usually pretty forgettable – it can be hard to even remember what you had for lunch yesterday! But if you go for a meal with a close friend at a restaurant you love, you’ll remember that meal for a long time. I want to give people memorable Pokémon experiences with one another.”

While I'm sure some will be disappointed with this statement, this doesn't necessarily rule out possibilities like a Pokemon MMO (imagine over 800 Pokemon...not sure how that will work). Granted, this has been Game Freak's stance for a long time, I believe. I guess personally, they want to preserve the vision and purpose of the games that Satoshi Tajiri envisioned long ago.

The ability to get people together, especially in person whether outside or in the house. That's part of many fans' memories of games of the past. While times have changed since 1996, there is a sense of connection between individuals sharing experiences face to face or online while playing Pokemon through handhelds that remain strong in the franchise and the reason why Pokemon is the handheld franchise. So whether you like this or not, this is how mainline Pokemon will remain for now.

Well, thats a shame. I cant imagine right now another franchise that would benefit from going big scale.

Communication in pokemon has gone to shit. He can't be serious. Internet is the future. An MMO with voice chat would easily outdo what the first games established because today, we are all connected online. Not by link cables or street pass.

But to his credit, in Japan, handhelds probably offer more communication opportunities because of the larger handheld market. He doesn't understand...a Pokemon MMO would set the world on fire. Not just the 15 Million people who keep buying it, we could see numbers mimicking rgb. But, if they have research and development going behind their reasonings, I can't complain.

Shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone tbh the serie since the beginning was built around portables right down to even fundamental design.

I actually think they missed a really big chance to make a console mainline pokemon on the Wii U. The Wii U itself was/is the console with the best interface for an online game with communication. The touchscreen on the gamepad makes typing easy.

That would be the killer software Nintendo or 3rd parties never seemed to understand would fit the system. That is what made Miiverse interesting and semi-sucessful with all those art drawings. The gamepad was a good communication interface.

The real reason : Too much work, haveing to do higher resolutions textures. Theyre just lazy :p

Maybe he's talking about communication between young gamers, as from the examples I showed. It not just long-time fans who will play these games, but also children or new gamers as well. Plus Japan is a smaller country than anything in North America, thus friends can meet each other a little easier unless one moves outside of the city or vice versa or something. Then you got the language barrier, which I'm not sure how MMOs have resolved that in which could work in Pokemon for all ages.

Just make something like super game boy. a SNES cartridge where you can put a GB game. I played my first pokemon games in that way.
Id apreciate an acessory to play the hadnheld games on home console.

With the NX looming and the rumors indicating hybrid or something similar in concept, it will be interesting to see where Game Freak will take Pokemon since they are confirmed to work on something for the upcoming console.

The Pokemon following often has massive lan like gatherings though much like Monster Hunter to the point it's become a big part of the appeal for those who go, the communication he's talking about is the social side of thing where fans actively socialize and these gatherings are examples of that. Even many fans who don't go utilize this as often groups of friends will have some Pokemon fans in them and they'd get together to trade and all.
