I actually think they missed a really big chance to make a console mainline pokemon on the Wii U. The Wii U itself was/is the console with the best interface for an online game with communication. The touchscreen on the gamepad makes typing easy.
That would be the killer software Nintendo or 3rd parties never seemed to understand would fit the system. That is what made Miiverse interesting and semi-sucessful with all those art drawings. The gamepad was a good communication interface.
