Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto Reveals He Came Up With Ideas For Donkey Kong In The Bath

Famed Nintendo developer Shigeru Miyamoto has confessed in a recent interview on Nintendo’s Japanese website that he came up with a number of Donkey Kong related ideas while he was comfortably relaxing in the company-owned housing’s communal bath.

"There was a water boiler that was used to make the hanafuda (traditional Japanese playing cards that Nintendo manufactures), and the water from this boiler was also used for a bathtub… at night when nobody was around, you could hang out there for a long time. It totally saved me. It was really effective at letting me put my ideas in order.”

I also come up with all kind of crazy ideas when I'm relaxing in the bathtub. Hopefully one day they'll come to fruition.. They probably won't. :(

It is insane, to imagine one man creating such iconic characters. Hell Walt Disney is still crazy to imagine.

Daily hot baths is common in Japanese culture. Hygiene in general has a bigger focus there and relaxation seems to be part of it (Onsens, Public baths, and bathing at home).

I would hope everyone in a first world country would at least once a day if not twice.

Haha, same. Well, as someone who thinks daily exercise is a necessary part of life yeah it would be mandatory from my POV to shower at least 1/day, sometimes twice if I exercise 2/day. But my point was mainly in relation to the fact that it's a hot bath as opposed to a normal shower. And they seem to like doing it before bed as opposed to the morning.

But then again there is also the hygeine/immunity theory saying that Westerners have developed less resistance to external germs/disease/bacteria due to their over-emphasis on cleanliness. Hard to say...

Yeah, you never know when you can get a really good idea. They can hit whenever. I've gotten some while running, while I am sleeping, and yeah, in the shower. Great ideas can hit you anytime xD

Even in your dreams. Or in Eiji Aunuma's case your nightmares. See Majora's Mask.

Yeah, I remember reading about that. It was awesome, hilarious, and quite eerie how Aonuma got the idea, and more so creepy that one of the developers showed up the cutscene he made that looked very much liek Aonuma's dream.
