Forums - Nintendo - Wii-U version of Bloodstained may be cancelled in favor of an NX release

On the Wii U Port of Bloodstained

“Yeah, it's a very complicated problem,” Iga said. “The reality is this: As timelines move on, certain pieces of hardware become irrelevant. Sometimes new pieces of hardware come out that make you think about what is the right strategy. And as a creator, usually you want to make stuff for the new hardware. That's the reality.”

“However, this was a game that was backed by people, and we made promises to listen to them. They're the people that gave us life so to speak. Any sort of change that we do or are considering that goes outside the scope of the promises we've made must be done with lots of explanation, must be done with lots of care, and must be done with lots of back and forth with them to see what options we have. We must listen to them at the end of the day, and we have made promises.”

“Unfortunately, some of those don't make as much sense anymore as they did before, and that's also reality. So you're in a very difficult position, and at the end of the day, if you're going to go in one certain direction, you want to make sure that you have support from them,” he explained.

“But so far we've, I think, been incredibly transparent through all the things that have happened with our backers, and they have been very supportive. So I'm hoping that if there is going to be a difficult decision some day, and we don't know, that we're able to have that conversation. If they say they don't get it, well that's where we're at. And if they say they do get it, well then, we'll be able to do things that are maybe more interesting. We'll see.

At least they didn't completely rule it out, but this is the same kind of muttering that Hyper Light Drifter got before that game was cancelled on WiiU too.

Realistically, Bloodstained is a 2018 release and then Armature are going to have to port the finished game to WiiU, so maybe even late in 2018. WiiU will have been discontinued for at least a year, if not a year and a half by then. I can see where they're coming from, but not everyone is automatically going to move over to NX straight away.

My hopes are now gone for a Vita port as well, although there's no official word on that.

That's kinda unfair. Heart Machine is a much smaller company than Bloodstained's developers.

And yet here we are with the WiiU version on the ropes.

I'm not suprised. Yet I'm not pissed either. I think I would do the same.

I know they might think that a NX port will be overall more profitable (and it will), but the WiiU backers did back the game for the WiiU, not the NX. It's certainly disrespectful to them, just like Project Cars.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

It sucks, there is no other word for it.But from a business point of view, it makes sense.By then, the wii u would have been discontinued, and most people would have moved to other consoles. If they make an NX version, and backers are fine with it, it wont be as much problem in my opinion.

At least Iga is being honest about it, one thing that Project Cars developer wasnt.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

This is kind of unfair to the people who donated money to buy the Wii U version... But at the other side it's not surprising after all.

It's on the ropes because they're not sure the effort to make a Wii U port will be worth it, because most people will be playing on the NX, PS4, PC, or Xbox One.

I would say don't make promises if you are not gonna be able to do it. The technology of Wii U and its future were already well known, is not like that came as a surprise.
