‘Gears of War’ Movie Adaptation in Works at Microsoft, Universal

Microsoft’s “Gears of War” video game franchise is headed to the big screen.

The film adaptation, announced during a livestream for the upcoming release of “Gears of War 4,” is being developed with Universal Pictures under the eye of veteran film producers Scott Stuber (“Ted,” “The Kingdom”) and Dylan Clark (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”). A movie based on the popular third-person shooter franchise has been rumored for years, but Rod Fergusson, studio head of game developer The Coalition, said now was the right time to make the leap to film.

It’s unclear at this point whether the film will be a straight adaptation of the games, which originally followed soldier Marcus Fenix in his fight against an invading threat known as the Locust, or if it will be an all-new story set in the universe.

You don’t have to wait until the film to jump back into the “Gears of War” universe. “Gears of War 4” will be released on Xbox One and Microsoft Windows on Oct. 11.

Confirmed: Gears of War movie will bomb.

Excited! It's important to also mention Rod's words that the film will not be a videogame adaptation.

This could be really good.

I predict with 95% certainty that it'll suck.

Ugh. So true.

It's not like it's a mystery on how to make a good movie.

Step 1 : Get a good budget put aside.

Step 2 : Get a good script from a proven writer together.

Step 3 : Get a great director lined up.

Step 4 : Get a good cast together, with the leads filled by appropriate talent.

Boom, great movie highly probable with this combo.

But instead, they know that the IP will have a built-in basic fanbase, and then for international market they know they can guarantee X amount in box office receipts with the right combo of explosions and marketing. So they sign a cheap director, rush a script through a group of McScript-athon writers, attach some B-list talent to fill the roles, give it a cheesy pop soundtrack, and poof : another mediocre-to-awful film is shat out upon us.

One final question: Gears 4 brings a new story, fresh characters and lots of famous faces. If interest for a Gears movie sparks up again, would you be open to taking on the role of JD in a live-action capacity?

It’s such a cool world, I don’t think any actor in the world would say no to being in the Gears of War movie. So, count me as a yes, but only if the boss permits it.

Its possible to make a really good movie based on nerd source material (latest Judge Dredd anyone?).

But that doesn't mean sufficient people will go and see it.

The Studio heads are so dense in dealing with the stuff. It's only relatively recent that they've figured out that getting quality directors can bring in huge numbers for comic book films (Chris Nolan, when they could keep him, though he got really bored with it by the time he hit his 3rd contracted batman film and wanted out). Jon Favreau is also above average as a director, and his films have been successful.

Comic Book films with bad directors :

Fantastic Four

Catwoman

Amazing Spider Man

Batman/Superman

Of those, only Batman/Superman made real money, but audiences were pretty divided over the end result. There are more examples, but I don't feel that it's worth going into more detail.

And the Rock will star in it.
