Its possible to make a really good movie based on nerd source material (latest Judge Dredd anyone?).

But that doesn't mean sufficient people will go and see it.

The Studio heads are so dense in dealing with the stuff. It's only relatively recent that they've figured out that getting quality directors can bring in huge numbers for comic book films (Chris Nolan, when they could keep him, though he got really bored with it by the time he hit his 3rd contracted batman film and wanted out). Jon Favreau is also above average as a director, and his films have been successful.

Comic Book films with bad directors :

Fantastic Four

Catwoman

Amazing Spider Man

Batman/Superman

Of those, only Batman/Superman made real money, but audiences were pretty divided over the end result. There are more examples, but I don't feel that it's worth going into more detail.
