Making up numbers is fun, kids! Seriously, figures like $25 difference just aren't supportable. Some have pegged it at $15 I believe, although IMHO it can very well be much less, more like <$5, especially if codec/copyprotection licencing is not covered. (Sony could make the UHD-BD player software a purchasable down-load, so only those interested need to pay licence fee) |
Except Im not makeing them up. Watch the video I linked. Michael pachter says them in the video (he either made them up, or knows them).

Seriously, you want to quote MICHAEL PACHTER now? Really, you want to stake this on believing him? Gotta remember this one.
But when I look into this more, I am actually more taken aback by your conduct here.
You might remember, there was a dedicated thread (which I started), focused solely on the ascertaining the actual cost differential.
You might remember that you yourself participated in said thread.
You might remember that your very first post there referenced a teardown cost analysis stating difference in price to be $15.50.
In fact, you were the very first poster in the thread to reference that specific cost figure.
JRPGfan said: Ive heard people quote some tear down that estimated the costs of the Xbox One Slim, and the drive there was like 15.5$ more expensive than the normal drive. I think thats where this idea of it just being a extra 15$ in terms of bills of materials comes from. |
So my reference to "some" claiming that figure, in fact directly APPLIES TO YOURSELF.
Yet you sit here throwing up bigger numbers, and arguing when people claim those are way above the mark.
WTF!? What kind of scuz bag shit is this? So sorry, but I don't need to waste my time with you anymore.
For anybody else,
the $15.50 difference was from IHS Markit teardown analysis of Xbone S (w/ 4K/UHD BD drive) saying it cost $33.50.
Although they claim previous drive cost $18, while their original analysis when Xbone came out stated it cost $32 ($28 for OG PS4).
And of course, all those figures would include normal copyright protection, codec, etc, licencing costs,
which could plausibly be split out from base cost by having those features only delivered thru PSN-purchased player software.
The increased physical requirements for 4K/UHD spec BD is so minimal that manufacturing costs can not be significantly higher,
not the least when OG PS4 drive is already above base BD spec itself in terms of read speed etc.
And in fact it isn't clear that 4K/UHD-BD capability isn't just a firmware patch away, not just for Pro, but also Slim or OG PS4.
The only reason why they couldn't be so patched is lack of hardware specs, which hasn't been shown to date AFAIK.
(interested to hear any solid sources on that, though)
