Forums - Gaming - Would it make sense for Sony to add an UHD drive in 12 months?

I feel like you're gonna defend them regardless of the position they took on UHD disc support.

More features isn't a bad thing, I'll end on that.

You're right about the defending part. He's already saying in other threads that people shouldn't care about UHD discs anyway because they aren't "real 4K" but upscaled, as if that is a bad thing. But then he says BluRay's look "exceptional" upscaled to 4K and is excited about upscaled 4K gaming. These things with lower quality assets upscaled to 4K are going to be super, and look "exceptional", but a UHD movie on a disc is a waste because it's not "real 4K".

400 million dollars saved by not including the drive... the hoops people will jump through, lol.

Seriously? How would it look if Sony released a fourth console revision just to add UHD support when X1 S was doing it over a year prior at a lower price.

The backlash would be big and it would also make Sony look reactive, something they claim they arent about.

Again, at this rate it could make sense for some PS4 Pro Slim 2 or 3 years from now. Thats the only way they can do it without looking bad

They can just say it as it is and say the price of one has come down.  Anyone who decided to get a scorpio over neo just for this feature could then get the neo as it would be cheaper.

Again we're only talking a small percentage of people here but if ain't going to cost them much then why not.

Ps4 is going to be over 70m come end of next year and xbox will be nowhere near that.  This thing isn't relevant in thr outcome of the gen.  It's just 1 little detail.

Sony has made all the right moves this gen including leaving the UHD drive out.  If the price is much lower come 12 months I'd say it's the right decision to include it.

I think it'd be good for Sony to add UHD down the road to compete head on with the Scorpio, maybe call it the PS4 Pro Plus lol If the Scorpio ends up with a higher price say, $499, then what's Sony got to lose if they release a PS4 Pro with 4k player at $499 as well.

Give the consumers 3 SKU:
- PS4 Slim for those that are content with 1080p
- PS4 Pro for those that want 4K gaming and doesn't buy 4K blu rays
- PS4 Pro Plus (4K player) for those that want it all.

Then down the road Sony can see which of the two (PS4 Pro or Pro Plus) sells more then eventually just discontinue one of the versions if it doesn't make sense to keep producing both.

Everyone is mad because Sony didn't add it but no one stops to wonder why?

My guess is Sony (the company I've seen stated of all companies that should have it because they're invested in it through entertainment and tech) has some data that suggest it's not as big of a deal as being made.  It's the most logical conclusion.

i thought it was odd to not have until I actually stopped reading internet rants and realized I was someone who went from around 500 dvd collection to 5 blu rays and when I buy 4k will likely not buy a single one.  Why?  Because streaming is much more convenient.  I don't want to have another expensive collection that's obsolete in a few year when the next big thing comes around.  That's the lesson I learned when I sold off my dvd collection for peanuts.

I imagine I'm not alone in that thinking and I further imagine Sony has data that backs it up.

and yet Sony are releasing for sale dedicated 4k bluray players next year...

Their reason might be that as well.  Maybe the blu ray was not as used for movie watching on the PS3 and now PS4 as people think.

To those saying there's not enough demand for a UHD blu ray player, just look at all the backlash because the PS4 Pro doesn't contain one. Such a silly omission, considering the friggin Xbox One S has one and you can bet the Scorpio will too. I'm a Sony guy but they fucked up bigtime here as well as by omitting the optical port on the Slim. Otherwise they had been pretty much flawless this whole generation.

I hear ya, defending and trashing 4K at same time seems exhausting.

I dunno, it just seems really odd a device leaning so hard into 4K wont support UHD discs. Frankly, who predicted PS4 Neo wasnt going to offer UHD support? It seemed like common sense.

It does seem odd unless they have data that suggests it's not as important as it's being portrayed.

Maybe, but they are leading the push into and for some reason felt no need to give people ability to watch 4K movies discs. Its just an odd move nobody predicted.

Also, I think the new drive helps future proof the Scorpio. The next consoles/upgrades will probably use the UHD drive.

I think there is going to be a group of people it has meaning for as well as a group it does not like most issues in life.

In all honesty we will not know if they fucked up for awhile or whether the backlash is large or small.  Sales will be a great indicator.

I completely agree it seems odd and I expected it but I am also not privy to whatever information they had that made them think it was not needed.

I figure

A) They want to sell separate drives

B) Their internal data suggest the blu ray was not used as much for movies on the PS3 and PS4 as we all think

C) They're dumb dumbs and sales will tank

Last gen Sony were the reason hddvd became obsolete.  And blu ray took over.

Wouldn't it be funny if this gen they put a nail in uhd Blu-rays coffin and were a big player in pushing 4k streaming.

Blu ray standard still has a long future though and the ps4 slim and pro featuring a regular bluray drive will enable that to continue its growth.  Which let's be honest it needs it.  It hasnt even beaten the dvd yet. The last thing we need is 3 movie formats.

They can say "we cheaped out last year on UHD, but maybe give us more money for the new model that simply adds UHD because we fear you might buy a Scorpio."

They cant do that or even give the impression. It would look bad and there would be backlash.

Look, your OP suggested a NEW PS4 with UHD to take an advantage from Scorpio. Im explaining why its a bad move and would hurt Sony. Its also reactive and Sony says they arent reactive. What Im saying is accurate so now youre trying to turn this into a sales argument. Sony is in a good position but they can still piss off their fans.
