I think people are missing the point about the UHD player. Even though streaming is popular with the masses for now. When 4k tv's become more common people will need to upgrade their internet connection to a faster speed to be able to stream. Most will not because they can't afford it, or they are screwed by a region where they have a shit ISP. I have a data cap as to how much I can use a month 4k streaming will kill my data in a week because it uses so much more than 1080p streaming.

Why are people so quick to agree that Sony is doing the right thing, instead of voicing their opinion and demanding choices?
Sony is following Apple's lead instead of giving you choices they are telling you what you want/need.
Like I said earlier I'm going to get the PS4 Pro since it will handle newer games better and if and when I jump into VR I will have a better experience there too. But I'm definitely getting the Scorpio too which is going to be my main entertainment hub.

i am voicing my opinion and my opion is i don't want UHD.  sony isn't telling me what i want/need.  sony created a product and i'm agreeing with their choice because physical is dead to me.  i'm happy that a ps4 pro won't include a UHD because it is a thing i will never want.  at no level is sony isn't going to put it in for free,.. if they put it in they'd simply raise the cost or cut costs somewhere else.

if you listened to the rumors the first draft of the neo had no upgrade to the cpu.  i far more appreciate that upgrade that will have an affect on games than the ability to play a movie format that is dead on arriaval.

People are being really dense, or quite frankly, stupid. Did you start buying DVDs before owning a DVD player? Did you start buying blu-rays before having a blu-ray player and HD TV? So why ask if people have been buying 4K blurays if they don't own a 4K blu-ray player and 4K capable TV, and if not, why they should care about there being a 4K bluray player?

To this day, my PS3 and PS4 remain my ONLY blu-ray players. I've never had a blu-ray player in a computer or have never had a standalone one. As have been said, a 4K stream will never compare with a 4K bluray. If Sony were so convinced about a streaming and digital future, why even include a blu-ray drive? Why not make the PS4 Pro completely digital?

Sony is not only a game constructor but also a TV constructor. If they wanted to encourage people to upgrade to 4K TVs, having a 4K PS4 would be a huge help. I just feel like Sony is being really stupid and short-sighted. It seems they've gone the Microsoft way in prematurely thinking it's time to go all-digital and all-streaming. That might happen one day, but not right now.

Whatever. I'll be saving up for a Scorpio.

I did actually by DVDs, Blu-rays and HD-DVDs before being able to play them. I first paid $400 for an early DVD drive to watch DVD on pc before buying an $800 early standalone player. Bought the HD-DVD add-on for 360 and the ps3 on launch to watch those movies.

This time I'm not buying early 4K movies though. The source material simply isn't there. The upgrade to scanning 35mm movies in 4K is very small and pretty much all digitally made movies from 2000 till very recently are limited with 2k masters and/or 2.8k footage. HDR is not something to simply add to old movies either. Max brightness in cinemas was 14Fl, 48 nits, not 1000 nits that HDR specifies.
There's no big advance in sound either. Blu-ray came with lossless sound, good step up from lossy dolby digital. I would have liked 96khz and 192khz tracks for 4K, the few blu-rays that have that sound phenomenal. Instead we only get more channels and object based sounds (dolby atmos). I don't have room for more speakers but do have a fully capable 192khz amp that gives me goosebumps when used properly. (Akira sounds so good)
There aren't any advantages to extras either on 4K releases. There are actually less extras and/or you have to swap discs to the included blu-ray version to access them.

4K blu-ray feels like the new Laserdisc to me. I'll get it at some point when I can afford to upgrade my projector. Yet I'm far far less excited this time than when DVD and Blu-ray got out. And that's from someone with over 600 dvds and over 500 blu-rays. There's a handful 70mm movies I would like on 4K, that's about it so far. The only advantage I see atm is less compression artifacts than regular blu-ray and better color resolution. (HDR doesn't work on projectors)

Whatever indeed. Maybe next year. Too early to buy a 4K tv with HDR still a moving target and 4K projectors are $8k and more. Scorpio might be coming at the right time. As a videophile I'm simply not impressed after reading 4K UHD disc reviews.

I'm in the same boat. I watch movies on my 1080p projector and no 4k tv, save for the enormously expensive 65 or 70 inch varieties are going to provide a better experience. On normal sized tvs (say, 40 to 50 inches) the difference between the 4k version and the blu ray isn't enough to pull me away from my projector screen or to pay extra for each disk. Once 4k projectors hit a more reasonable price, I'll be ready to maybe jump into 4k blu rays, but for my other tvs, even if they're 4k, regularblu rays and 4k streaming will be good and affordable enough.

I would buy them if owned both a 4k TV and a 4k blu ray player.

People just want to start drama where there is none, as usual. A lot of these XB1 S owners who keep bringing it up probably don't even own a 4K TV, let alone ever bothered to buy a 4K Blu-Ray, and you're right; physical distribution for films and TV is dying out. Streaming services are simply much more preferable because of convenience, variety, and cheaper prices. In the case of PS4 Pro, it can still play regular Blu-Ray, and I'll my bottom dollar that Sony is going to introduce 4K movie streaming through either PS Vue or the PS store.

Deadpool, and Batman vs Superman last week.

none because i dont have a player....

Yesterday :)

Its a strange generation. At the start of this gen everyone was against always online and digital content only. Now its ok not to have phyical disks. It wasnt long ago when these consoles were rumored to not have a disk drive built in and everyone was complaining.
I wonder how they will feel when next gen consoles have no Drives at all. I wonder if they wouldnt care if they cut the Blu Ray drive completely from the PS4 Pro just to save on costs since everyone is all of a sudden for digital content. Why not since Sony doesnt care about your 4k Disks either.
Me when it comes to gaming i prefer digital. When it comes to movies i prefer Physical media due to the higher quality.

Yea, I'm same as you. Have pretty much 90% of my collection in digital games.

But movies, I want in physical.

Great thing about movies is, they also come with digital code. Blu Ray's I buy come with blu ray, dvd and digital code.

NOW future 4k movies I buy will come with 4k, blu ray and digital code.

I mean for only an extra $5 or so you are basically future proofing your collection even if you don't have a 4k player yet.

Do I like buying movies again? Don't mind it. I will get the LotR and some others again on 4k. THe nice thing about when new formats come out is that you see what movies really where good. You look at your collection and think, do I want to spend another $30 on this movie again. If it's a yes, then you know it's a great movie that you watch again and again.

When did you ever buy a 4k Tv?
