Forums - Gaming - Is no 4K Bluray on PS4 Pro the biggest BS Sony pulled yet?

I just find it silly. It was such a huge deal how the PS3 could do *cough* everything. Now Sony has the chance to do even more than everything with the PS4 Pro and 4K, but they dont. Silly.

Remember when the PS3 was the cheapest blu ray player? Silly.

All of that was true though, PS3 did try to do 'everything' and it was a good value.  It was my Blu-Ray player.  That doesn't mean it turned out the best business strategy for Sony.

PS3 could do 'everything', and it struggled for years to catch up to Xbox 360 in sales, lost billions, and lost PlayStation's position as Sony's most profitable business.

PS4 focused on gaming, and beat Xbox One by almost 2:1 life to date sales, making Sony's entertainment divison the top division once again.

That's a good change of strategy for them.

Remember when the PS3 could do everything, and it struggled like hell to catch up to Xbox 360 in sales, lost billions, and lost PlayStation's position as Sony's most profitable business?

The Wii U focuses on gaming. The PS4 and XBO do much more than just gaming.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

PS4, XBO and Wii U all have apps to various extents.  Apps are a commodity these days; it costs $35 to get a HDMI media stick.  Only XBO really emphasized it's non gaming aspects to much extent.

you can watch blu-ray,people must mean ultra when complaining

i don't get the fuss, buy an xbox-s or scorpio when it comes out, sony just nailed gen 8 with the ps4 & ps4pro plus we have psvr with the pro,it all sounds good for gaming to me

ps4 sales will be well over 50m by the time scorpio hits the shops, don't see the problem unless it is fanboy issues

at least when the scorpio arrives it keeps up the tradition where the most powerful console never wins the gen ,have to wait until gen 9 to see if that continues

No need for so much defense. Sony set themselves up. Their marketing of the PlayStation have been about being an entertainment center since the PS2. How did the PS3 ads go? It only does everything? They were the DVD company, the Blu-ray company. They created an Image of themselves as the front-runners of media technology, and yesterday they fell a bit short of it. It's all on them.

Exactly man. When even the cheaper Xbone S has a feature the PS4Pro does not, something is wrong, very wrong. Even if u don't care about bluray, it should feel wrong to you because MS was able to do something on their cheaper console that Sony wasn't, and they don't even have 4k tvs to sell you.

Changing their strategy from PS3 days has been good business for them, has it not?

Sony's TV division almost went belly up... so who knows if that's their focus.  These days promoting 4K benefits Samsung and LG more than Sony.

A lot of people are mis-understanding what it really takes to for a drive to be 4K-UHD compatible.

The physical disk drive only has to be BD-XL capable, or in other words be able to read up to 4 layers on the media which results in the ability to read a 100GB BD-Rom. This alone is not expensive at all. You can get a BD-XL capable drive for less than $40 for a PC, whereas a non-BD-XL drive is around $30.

If the PS4 Pro has a BD-XL capable drive it will only require a firmware update for it to play.

Right, and that $10 difference is consumer prices, when UHD is currently a niche market (i.e. highest profit difference).
Sony will have volume discounts and OEM prices (actually, self-production costs), so this is <$5 at most.
If they use their own drives, they can benefit their economies of scale by PS4 NEO pushing UHD drive adoption.
That "guaranteed" production lot can enable larger scale production efficiency, making their standalone UHD drives more competitive.
And actually, it seems like a BDXL/4k drive would have gaming benefits since it would allow larger game media,
or alternately, simply repetition/strategic location of data to facilitate faster loading and seek times from drive.

It does feel sad that people are reflexively trying to defend the decision, invariably with the baseless claim that 4k drive would "cost alot".
if the tables were switched and MS was "lacking" while Sony was including 4k drives, I'm sure they wouldn't be pushing the same line.
Anybody can search my post history to see I'm not a MS fan, and am supportive of Playstation overall, but that does not mean a spade isn't called a spade.

PS4 was hundred+ more than the market would bear for gaming console.
Price difference for BDXL/4k drive is ~$10 for single units, large batch OEM/self-production cost would be half of that.
Don't really see the basis for comparison there.  Sony doesn't need to profit from broader BD4k/TV market to do this, MS certainly doesn't.

All Sony has been doing the last year is pushing their streaming crap in commercials on TV. Uncharted 4 is the only game related commercial I have seen from them this year. Also PlayStation has always been a Entertainment system, not a video game console. Their words.

I din't know UHD BR was such a big deal. They may add it for the slim version although TBH slim version are always cheaper. PS3 was 100$ more expensive due to BR for that time. I think that helped 360 a lot during initial release and really did not matter much during that gen. Here I guess they are saving some 50$ may be. I think this is worth the risk. If they could get it for 400$ they would have had it.

4K blu-Ray player is a niche within a niche .

IF

=> you have 4K TV => You have 4K blu Ray player => Have a 4K blu Ray movie => This Niche applies to you.

4K TVs aren't even mainstream yet.

Apparently somebody forget to tell Sony that because they're marketing a console towards 4KTV users. Half their press event yesterday was an infomercial for selling 4KTVs.

If you don't have a 4KTV or don't plan on buying one then all this PS4 Pro discussion should be moot to you anyway.

THIS!

The same people that praise 4K gaming are defending Sony for not supporting 4k BluRays, because nobody has a 4K TV anyway.

If I pay an extra $400 for my upgraded console, I want the real deal. The Pro looks half baked right now, because MS told us months ago, they will bring a mich more powerful machine to the market next year.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...
