This is pretty weird and worrying a deal though, Apple are massive... but in a way that could swallop up Nintendo.

Doubt that MS tried to reel Nintendo back in the early 00s and were dismissed (according to what was reported back then Yamauchi told the MS execs to kiss his balls before telling them to disappear) so I doubt Apple will.

This is bascially Nintendo making money off another format to boost their main ventures.

That's not true, Yamauchi did consider the offer from Microsoft for like a full week, he just decided against it in the end. It would be hard for him to sell, he basically built the company from nothing into a global brand, it was his life's work, and he wasn't hurting for money, but to say that he didn't consider it is false.

Also a lot of the stuff about Mr. Yamauchi tossing insults around is largely internet creation, it's funny, but there is decorum and professionalism among Japanese business culture too. You don't run around insulting people like Bill Gates.

More like it was pitched to him and when the exec turned up the following week he got told to get told to f off, Yamauchi would never sell them.

He decided no, but the whole thing about him swearing at MS reps is all bunk. No Japanese businessman worth his salt acts like that, there are levels of professionalism and a decorum to Japanese business, even among stern people like Yamauchi. He would never insult a fellow very successful businessman Bill Gates in that way.

Microsoft was simply told "no" after after Yamauchi studied the offer for about a week and that was that.

The "kiss my ass" and "lick my balls" type stuff ... lol, maybe in a South Park TV episode, not so much in real life.

Even after that just for the record Bill Gates said in 2004 that any call from Mr. Yamauchi was to go directly to him personally, he was still interested in buying Nintendo.

You think that might hurt them though?
Whenever they eventually make a new 2D Mario game for the NX, that people will pass on it because they're already content with Super Mario Run?

Aye they've been in the game since 1889 haha, they're unlikely to end up in a "beats by dre" position still though, taking the first part stuff away from Nintendo hardware just a couple of months before the reveal of the NX is a bad idea imo, why by the hardware if the characters and experiences could appear on other systems if you get me?

Pokemon Go caused 3DS hardware & software sales to increase so its possible that their other mobile offerings can spark interest in NX.

Besides anybody who thinks Super Mario Run is a suitable replacement for a mainline 2D Mario on Nintendo hardware arent likely to buy the console regardless.

Except Yamauchi was known for speaking with out a filter go read his quotes especially the one about RPG players and the comment about MS in general sp you're wrong on the account that he'd never insult.

It's hard to know though how many people are content enough with Pokemon Go that they won't bother purchasing an NX.

My guess is for people who are quite casual, things like Pokemon Go and Super Mario Run scratch their Nintendo itch to the point where they won't want to invest in a $250+ piece of Nintendo hardware.

For people who are lapsed Nintendo fans, like say they owned a Game Boy, and are more experienced gamers some of them might get the urge to buy a Nintendo system.

It's an open question at this point. Like 50 million people are playing Pokemon Go, so if the extent of the Pokemon "bump" is maybe 20,000-30,000 more 3DS' sold in a month in the US market ... I mean that is an OK bump, but is it something that sustains itself for months as well.

But at least now Nintendo can still make money from these people, because they weren't buying a Wii U and huge decreases of them going from DS to 3DS as well.

No, anybody who considers an endless runner as a viable replacement for a mainline Mario title isnt likely to buy a console for Mario in the first place.

I'm actually surprised at how much of a "fully featured" Mario game this looks like. It doesn't just look like some small game, it basically does look like a new NSMB game just with touch controls. Mario can even stop and jump backwards in certain areas, the game is designed in a very clever way.

Like i said, anybody who thinks Pokemon GO or Super Mario Run are suitable replacements for mainline titles are unlikely to spend a few hundred dollars on Nintendo hardware in the first place.

Somebody who is strongly considering spending $200-300 on hardware for $40-60 games isnt going to change their mind because of free-to-start spinoffs with completely different play styles.
