I am mistaken, I've always been under the impression that upscaling 1080p content to 4k yields better results than upscaling 1440p content.

Maybe you're right. It just seems odd to me that most people are talking about upscaled 4k because it's unlikely the PS4Neo will be able to do 4k native. But no one seems to be considering the native resolution could be 1440p.

Whatever the case, the Neo will support 4k output. Now if you are connected to a 4k TV there will be upscaling happenning somewhere. The TV either upscales the content it gets to its native resolution or the console upscales it's native render to match it's output resolution.

Chances are that the console will do a much better job at upscaling than the TV.

Then there is the little fact that (unless the person is crazy) the Neo (even if it had 5TF GPU) cannot handle native 4k games. So whatever we are getting in 4k is going to be upscaled from some lower native render. Be it 1080p, 1440p or 1800p.

My money on Neo games is that they are run at a 1440p native render, down samples to 1080p and then upscaled to 4k for output.

I'm not technically minded so I don't know if we're agreeing or not.

Haha!! Yes we are.

I'm inclined to think though that most of that GPU muscle will go to just getting the 1080p native render used in the og PS4 looking as clean as possible with all the extra bells and whistles they can throw at it. Then upscale that for a 4k output.

Just sounds like a much better use of resources than pushing for as high a native resolution as possible. Cause that can cause it's own issues.

eg. Take Horizon for instance. Say all  we have seen of the game is of it running at 1080p@30fps. They could end up with a game that looks/runs worse than the og PS4 version if they push for native 4k. Or even 1800p.

I'm not going to pretend I'm as clued in as many of you as to resolution rendering and such, but I do remember that the specific Neo guidelines were merely that, for the Neo mode of games, developers needed a resolution of at least 1080p and a similar or better framerate as the regular ps4 version. Sony also suggested that developers aim for 1800p over 1440 if they wanted a better picture, as 1800 apparently upscales more capably to 4k than 1440p. However, that was only a suggestion. There was no mandate as to resolution beyond a required 1080p, so technically devs could, as Intrinsic said, focus entirely upon maximizing the 1080p image if they so pleased.

I hope I didn't write something wrong and/ or dumb :)

Might be a bit early, but would be cool to see what From Software is up to

Definitely. One of my fave devs. And I would kill for another King's Field and Armored Core.

Does anyone know what time this will end? Because I would prefer to watch the whole thing live, but I have class at 5PM Central Time. I think it's safe to assume this won't be 3 hours long, right?

Yes, I agree, it's much better to go for 1080p with all the 'extras' than it is the produce 4K by making the tech behind the game bare boned. We might see some native 4K games but they're likely to be games that don't really push the hardware in other ways, like Don't Starve or Starbound. I do however expect everything else to be 4K, like Netflix or Blu-ray playback. Sony will want to go with 'native' 4K messaging if possible.

It's twenty hours. GMT time is 4 hours ahead of US Eastern right now (I live in the Eastern time zone :) ) so it will be at 7 GMT tomorrow.
