Forums - Nintendo - What do you expect from the NX's Wi-Fi chip?

AC I'd be all for, but as far as I know the only difference between a 5ghz channel and a 2.4ghz channel is the frequency at which it broadcasts. I don't believe it is meant to be faster, it is meant as an alternative for a really over-burdened 2.4ghz channel. Almost every home wireless device in existence is built to work on the 2.4ghz channel, so the 5ghz channel was created as an alternative to give those devices that had the capability a channel just for them in order to create less interference on the 2.4ghz one. However, the range and stability of the 5ghz channel in my experience just sucks and is not worth using. We have a lot of devices in the house on the 2.4ghz and honestly have never really had an issue or slow-down.

I do hope Nintendo includes AC though, that would be primo

It's the complete opposite for me...all my devices are completely off the 2.4 spectrum due to horrible interference. A good 5GHz router can reach even the blackest of blackspots in my house.

Oh, and Wi-Fi AC is exclusively 5GHz.

I didn't realize that AC Wifi was 5ghz, my apologies on that one. However, in my experience with AC wifi it is much cleaner, further reaching, and faster than standard 5ghz channel. I wonder why that may be?

I hope they go for 5GHz. It's rapidly becoming the new standart and seeing the same old 2.4 would be dissappointing.

There's tons of Wi-Fi standards these days, and 5GHz Wi-Fi offers a huge improvement over the 2.4GHz standard in terms of speed and interference. Do you expect the NX will use this? Or will they pull a 3DS on us and opt for slower G Wi-Fi?

By the way, the Wii U had a 5GHz chip used exclusively for Gamepad streaming, so Nintendo is well aware of how good the tech is.

5GHz is used for bandwidth reasons, but range becomes an issue. It only covers a room.
2.4GHz has lower bandwidtch but much better range. Covers various rooms.
There is a compromise between each.

The Gamepad used 5GHz due to bandwidth priorities and it's the reason of its limited range.
The NX could use 2.4GHz for internet connectivity and 5GHz for the screen sharing miracast.

False. A good 5GHz AC router has beamforming technology, which means that it can cover mulitple rooms with little signal degradation. If the NX has Dual Band tech, then customers can get the best of both worlds and not be prone to interference.

I doubt that the NX will have screen broadcasting tech this time, so the spectrum should be open to use!

I think it will have 2.4 ghz wireless N at a minimum and if we are lucky, 5 ghz. I doubt it will have AC cause the vast majority of the routers that come with peoples internet plan is wireless N. Would be nice to have AC tho.

Can you give me a link with that info? I would like to read upon it.

I've tried the latest Fritz!Box 5GHz bands and range only covered my living room. It is also true that my house is not made out of paper or wood, but real brick and mortar plus reinforced floors/ceiling.

802.11ac has decent range due to beamforming me thinks. Read it here.

Of course if your house is brick and mortar...well.
