After watching the last Nintendo Direct I can't help but to notice how pretty much all the titles shown there were... so uninspired. Ports, low budget games, RELAUNCHING of a 2013 game to add flippin amiibo compatibility... I felt really underwhelmed while watching the whole thing.
But this is not something new at all. Nintendo has done this same thing during the last years. Mario Party 10, Kirby and the Rainbow Course, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, Metroid Prime Federation Force, Animal Crossing HHD, New Super Mario Bros. 2... even games that are pretty damn good like Super Mario 3D World or A Link Between Worlds feel somehow "weak"compared to other entries in previous consoles. Sure, we have pretty big megatons like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Super Smash Bros. 4, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Splatoon or Kirby Planet Robotot... but I really feel like Nintendo is not even trying to make awesome games. Or at least, not with the same enthusiasm they did in a not that far time.
I've been replaying Super Mario Galaxy this week. And damn, I wish I had a Mario game of that caliber on my Wii U. I want to play a Mario game like Galaxy and feel amazed by the creativity of the level design, the gameplay, the incredible soundtrack... heck, the sense of adventure. That's something that Mario has never had until Galaxy came out and it felt great. I want a Metroid game with amazing graphics and with the same quality in every aspect as Super Metroid, Zero Mission or the Prime series. I know it's not Nintendo's most profitable IP so I'm not expecting a Metroid title every 1-2 years, but damn, we've spent 6 years until we got a damn spin off! I want to play a Mario Party game with my friends without thinking that it was "meh" or even boring. How hard can it be to make a good party game? They nailed it with Wii Party not too long ago, and that was a new IP. Why are they struggling to make it right with an stablished IP that has always been the pinacle of party games? I want them to stop making an incredible amount of spin offs and start thinking in bigger things. I'm tired of their attitude. Everyone shits on the Wii and even the Gamecube to some extent. But even with all the problems the Wii had, I never thought Nintendo was holding back. They consistently impressed me with game after game. And I can't say the same with this generation of consoles. Sure, we had some great games. But there were too many times for my taste when I felt disappointed when it comes to Nintendo titles.
Breath of the Wild, which is the only Nintendo game confirmed for NX so far sounds promising. And they say they want to fix the mistakes they made with the Wii U with NX. I hope they're right. Because right now... I don't feel too happy about Nintendo. Not at all.
