Im not shure it will happen , but you can never know . Anyways , difference between the consoles will be ~ 5-7 years , the question is how much will the old one be supported ...

I suspect it will at least make 8 or 9, though they will probably stop manufacture before 10 years, they might still offer some sort of support through to the ten years
I don't see either the psp or ps3 lasting 10 years

Agreed.
It is all good if they will still offer support, updates and publishers will still be selling new games for it.
The business moves so quickly nowadays that I think it would be foolish to assume that they will not be marketing a newer console within that period but at least they plan to be in it for the long-haul....or at least this is what they think right now........
They may keep it round for 10 years. But the sales will be nowhere near the PS2 sales. But the claim of future proof has already gone out the window. The market in tech has made a massive change in gaming technology behind the scenes. The wii is the new PS2 in terms of sales. And I believe the will outsell the PS2's lifetime sales. Sony need the 10 years with PS3 just to make some profit. At the mo they losing even more than when they released(The price drop they were forced to make). I think from MS they will drop the price of 360 when they release their new machine(Late 2010) and keep 360 available and affordable for everyone. (Like PS2 is now)
for PS3, I'm looking at 5-6 years only with the next Xbox looking to be released soon

I think that th only way for the Ps3 to actually survive the 10 years is blu ray, its catching up too 360 but it wont survive because of games.
PSP is a maybe too, considering it has near ps2 if not ps2 graphics, the next handheld that Nintendo will bring out will probably only be slightly better or equal in graphic ability. UMD movies were a complete failure and unlike the ps3, the psp survives on games and homebrew.

You don't HAVE to upgrade to keep getting new games. God of War II came out five months after the ps3 released. ^^ |
It was discontinued (no more shipments) before 10 years and 4 months I think..... If you check the hardware shipment data on this site the last shipment was in the 6 months before March 2005.... I think it is likely it was a last Christmas shipment therefore it "only" lasted 10 years and 1 month, but as it is not broken down into quarters we don't know that for sure.
The NES by the way lasted 20 years, although in decent sales terms it was only really 9 or 10 I think.

If Sony really wants to keep it around for 10 years it is pretty easy, but it doesn't prove anything if it doesn't sell after it's successor, all it will be is bragging rights similar to what I just said with the NES, the last 5 years of the NESs life it barely shipped 1 million so those years don't really mean much.

Consoles should last more than 10 years. I think the ps3 will last more, due to the online updates/firmware. If the ps2 can last almost 8.5 yrs without updates why can't the ps3 go longer. Sony has proven its consoles last. You get what you pay for I guess. Games are also going to last longer as they get updates.
