Forums - Nintendo - NX Buyers: 1080P Or Better Detail 720P?

Smash Bros was limited by the Wii U's lack of memory bandwidth, so it used very simple lighting.

The NX, if Nintendo doesn't seriously goof off with power again, might be able to do proper lighting at 1080p.

Even if NX has the juice to do Mario Kart 8/Captain Toad graphics at 1080p, the fact remains that rendering in 1080p means drawing twice as many pixels as 720p, which means half as much fillrate for things like shaders. I'd much rather that power be spent on x2 better shaders, effects, etc than the (in my opinion) rather negligible improvement that 1080p offers.

There won't be any noticeable difference from Wii U if they go 720p. Most people have 1080p monitors anyways, and it offers a HUGE improvement in image quality over 720p upscaled, where a lot of detail/shading is blurred. Play a Wii game, then play it again on Dolphin. See the difference resolution makes?

It's kinda sad but it's come to this, I really hope NX can at least be double the horsepower of the Wii U. I hope this isn't another Wii situation where's it's the equivalent of 50% overclocked (technically the "2 GameCubes duct taped together wasn't exactly accurate as the Wii wasn't even that, lol).

Double the Wii U @ 720p would be ... at least a noticable improvement I guess.

I've tried it on my own TV, going from games like Captain Toad or Tropical Freeze at 720p to Rayman Legends or Smash Bros at 1080p. It's slightly sharper, but the difference isn't dramatic.

And if NX does turn out to be powered by Tegra X1, then it should be capable of doing notably better graphics than Wii U at 720p; superior shaders and effects, more detail, higher resolution shadows and textures, etc. At 1080p, however, it won't be able to far exceed what Wii U can do at 720p.

You said itself, Wii is practically clocked GC, totaly same hardware, NX will have totally different type of hardware and architecture to Wii U.

Well Zelda WW HD is 1080p and probably is Wii U game with most sharped graphic.

I still wonder if a Tegra X2 can match up with an older Nvidia mobile GPU ... like lets take the Nvidia 830M from 2014:

This is a laptop GPU, Nvidia 830M specs:

DDR3 RAM (64-bit memory bus), 14.4GB/sec

256 CUDA Cores, 16 TMUs, 8 ROPs

Maxwell Architecture, 28nm

554 GFLOPS floating point performance

17.31 Gigatexels/second

8.66 Gpixels/second

Under 25 watts power usage

The Tegra X1/X2 (custom Nintendo chip?)

LPDDR4 RAM (128-bit memory bus?) 51GB/sec

256 CUDA Cores, 16 TMUs, 16 ROPs

Pascal Architecture (?), 16nm FinFET

625 GFLOPS floating point performance (Tegra X2 supposed performance)

16 Gigatexels/second (Tegra X1, X2 could be better)

16 Gpixels/second (Tegra X1, X2 might be better)

A Nvidia 830M is capable of running a lot of PS4/XB1 ports even at pretty decent resolutions ...

Batman Arkham Knight 1366x768 resolution; 30 frames per second (PS4/XB1 only title):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQxNpEaCsiw

Assassin's Creed Unity: 1360x768 resolution (PS4/XB1 only game):

Star Wars: Battlefront:

I mean in portable mode these games wouldn't really even have to run at this high of a resolution, 1024x600 or even 960x540 would be good enough for a little 6-inch display. I hope Nintendo really pushes this Nvidia tech, though I half suspect they'll just kinda settle for so so performance.

WWHD also has Gamecube geometry and runs at 30fps with drops below though.

Yes, but we talk about sharp graphic, and WW HD has most sharped graphic on Wii U.

I still don't think the difference in image quality is a drastic leap over 720p titles like Captain Toad or Tropical Freeze.

Well WW HD has noticeable sharper and more clear image, we don't really know how exactly difference would be Captain Toad and Tropical Freeze in 1080p vs current 720p, but definitely image would be noticeable sharper and much more clear.
