The other question I would have regarding this. Sure it doesn't appeal to you personally, but can you speak for the 60 million 3ds owners or the approximately 13 ish million Wii U owners? They are guaranteed to grab basically the entirety of their handheld market, and at least a portion of the home console market, including possibly more from other home consoles depending on their approach with this thing. I believe if anything it is destined to be a huge success, especially with all of the crazy hype around it.

I can't and won't speak for all those users, but as a Wii U owner I'm not interested in a handheld NX, even if it connects to a TV.

Nintendo's handheld audience doesn't really seem to care that much about power. When you look at the biggest handheld and mobile successes, graphics have played little to no role in the success.

For the console market, this thing is going to get basically zero third party support. Coming off the failure of the Wii U, considering the relative install bases, and considering historical performance of third party games on the NX, it's hard to make a good case for third party development.

What we have is a Wii U, except the gamepad can come with you. And while that's kind of neat, it's nowhere near enough to overcome the Wii U's many flaws.

Which is why I don't really believe in these rumors. It just seems too stupid to be true. It's possible that the rumors are partly true, or are missing some details that would make it make sense. I think you and many others are thinking about this device in the wrong way.

The primary purpose is to allow for a single device to get the combined the support of Nintendo's handhelds & consoles.

This device will likely get strong 3rd party support, just that it will primarily consist of Japanese, indie & family friendly games.

Anybody who honestly thought Nintendo was going to actively push for a device so that it could get things like Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls, etc. had unrealistic expectations.

Too many variables to make any kind of final prediction but looking at the market today, I think Nintendo is looking at strong sales of NX in Japan, but probably just "ok", maybe somewhat mediocre sales in the West.

It will really depend on how they handle the Android issue IMO. A portable device released in this day and age without access to the app features kids/teenagers/grown ups love is going to be a tough sell in the West even with all the Nintendo games. They need to square up with this audience and get them on their side instead of fighting against mobile. You can't win that fight. If they could do that the upside in sales for the unit could change. 

I would say 35-50 million right now for NX though, that would be down from the 3DS, but it could still be a decent number. I'm assuming that Nintendo will get some design elements right, but a few wrong. I guess that would be disspointing in the context that Wii U + 3DS sold probably about 74-75 million but I think Nintendo will also have large profits from a new second (first?) pillar this gen which will be mobile games so that more than cancels out the contribution made by the Wii U this gen. If they have a break out new type of hit software obviously that number goes up.

Dev kits did ship last did they not? The WSJ report is from October of last year. It's possible Nintendo was using some type of different chip at that time and the Tegra X1 was only put into more modern kits, looks like that's going to be replaced by a Pascal Tegra in the last round of kits.

I wouldn't say 60 million is gaurunteed. 

My personal guess would be 40-50 million or thereabouts (of course this is subject to change since I'm dealing with limited information). 

That's still I mean pretty decent ... you wouldn't say the Super NES was a massive failure. Nintendo would make good money from a usberbase that size. 

It could be lower, could be higher obviously we have no way of knowing how the broader market will react to this concept.

Since this would be possibly the only unit that would play the games while being able to hook to a TV if you so choose, I would think that sales would AT LEAST match the 3DS, with some other carryover from competition of course. So I could see it making 60m+ for sure all things considered.

yeah i just cant for the life of me seeing the rumor NX hitting 60m+ life time. Japan cant carry it alone and I couldnt see this concept being popular in america,but hey i could be wrong lol
