N64 has definitely aged the least gracefully of Nintendo's systems, but games like Mario 64, Starfox 64, and Ocarina of Time felt like true epics, overflowing with raw ambition, while their GCN followups felt watered down by comparison. (Pardon the pun :p) |
I actually think in ambition, WW feels very, very ambitious. I agree with the dungeons criticism, mainly felt there were too few. But give me the Sea over Hyrule Field from OoT any day. And compared to their time, sure OoT feels more ambitious, but I would say Majoras Mask is better for one reason: that which is a hallmark of technical achievement is destined to later be a monument to technical limitations. And that's what OoT feels like: a fairly normal Zelda designed to show the N64's abilities, not designed to make use of the available resources in the most pleasing way (as MM did). The only one I think has aged really, really well is Star Fox 64. And like I said, I like the games. They've just aged with very little grace. And I also disagree with GCN being overrated.
