From all twe new FF15 info released over the past few days this is one thing that has got me most excited and that I think isn't being given enough attention. I think this change in how magic is treated in FF15 is a game changer for the franchise and is going to be one of the best things in the game.

For those that aren't aware. in FF15 you don't use MP to cast magic. Magic is just an item. You don't even level up magic spells as you level up your character, you level up magic by making more powerful spells.

Now for those that played FF8, FF15 is in some ways very similar to 8 with how it deals with magic. Well, as far as drawing magic is concerned. But here unlike FF8 you don't draw every and any spell from an enemy; in 15 you draw one of (apparently) 4 base elements from the world. Fire, ice....etc. Then you take what you have drawn, and by mixing it with other items in your inventory, adding more or less of certain items, you can create spells.

To me, this is all fantastic. I've played almost every FF game there is, and theere thought of what would need to be done to make spells like Holy, meteor, mega flare.....etc is something I'm really looking forward to. I mean it adds a completely different dynamic to this, we don't just go around the world hunting down possibly rare items just to add to the recipe of some sort of spell, but even when we make said spell we be very careful of how we use it. I think this adds a new dynamic to the game.

So am I alone in this and thinking that this is probably the best thing they could.have done with Magic?

Hardly a game changer, each iteration of FF has a different magic system. 13 didn't really have MP either. In FF8 you didn't have to draw magic either, if you knew how to play the game GF could learn abilities which allowed you to create magic from items, considering you pretty much always got items after battles, it was easier to change unwanted items (and even cards) to magic instead of drawing it.

I'd say I liked FF6 and 9s best where the magic you learnt was tied to a Summon (6) or weapon (9) you had equiped, not just a linear path like 10 or 13 (13 being the worse created yet, press X to learn magic, no changing roles now, that's too expensive and not worth it, stick to what we tell you to do).

Now imagine this magic system with traditional ATB, that's the best thing they could have done.

I hope its enough to convince me not to cancel my pre-order, the combat looks horrid to me.



Not a fan of using magic like an item tbh.



I don't like it, didn't like the draw system in 8, and I won't like it in 15. I hardly use magic or GF in FF8 because of it and it seems like it'll be the same deal here. I'll just be doing attacks and special abilities, and some summoning here and there I guess.

It seems pretty interesting. Not sure what everyone's gripes are other than it throwing them off and it not being similar to past FF games. It adds an experimental edge to the game and the spells seem far more useful.

Most spells in past FF games became useless after you got the more powerful versions. There are some exceptions for the sake of MP conservation, like maybe you would use Fira against weaker enemies rather than Firaga, but still..the base fire, water, lightining etc. spells became useless after the beginning of each FF game and so did a lot of status effect white magic spells. The majority of the time they never even worked on the enemies that would be more beneficial to use them on.

I heard you can provide some of these to your party members from a playstation access video as well. So even if Noctis has abilities that far outweigh the need for some spells, you can give the leftovers to your party members.

There was an item mix that mentioned an extra EXP bonus when used with magic in that playstation access video too so it's got multiple different uses.

Its amazing how divisive this franchise always is. I guess there are always those that like how something was done more in one part over another another. The price you pay for trying to make every entry different.

It's only been divisive since maybe FF X-2 or even FF XIII. Depending on how you dissect and argue divisive, in my opinion. 



See the thing is, I would have zero problem with this if they did this correctly, and that is give the option for both, almost every JRPG that has the item magic thing also has the class magic thing. Why not have both, why do they have to abadon one for the other. It offers variety of ways to play as well.

For as much as they want to this to be variety of ways to play, it confuses me when they take away things that are common in the genre.

The great thing about this system is that even if you don't want or need to use magic for damage purposes, you have other reasons when combined with items.  Alchemy is something that has been in FF games before: FFV's alchemist class for instance and maybe even before that (don't recall a previous FF before FFV that had alchemy), so it's definitely a classic mechanic.

It's just that there isn't a classic blue menu screen, so that could be throwing some people off.  And I'm not being sarcastic with that.  If the classic blue menu screen came in with classic retro sounds and a retro look, you'd get some naysayers onboard who want that classic feel despite other differences; which is most important to them in a lot of ways.  How the game feels from a visual and audio standpoint and helps adhere to their memories created from times past.

 

Edit: There is supposed to be something called ring magic (there's also wild magic, no idea what that is) which if I had to guess, doesn't use disposable items, so we'll have to see how that works out too.  Maybe ring magic uses MP.
