It seems pretty interesting. Not sure what everyone's gripes are other than it throwing them off and it not being similar to past FF games. It adds an experimental edge to the game and the spells seem far more useful.
Most spells in past FF games became useless after you got the more powerful versions. There are some exceptions for the sake of MP conservation, like maybe you would use Fira against weaker enemies rather than Firaga, but still..the base fire, water, lightining etc. spells became useless after the beginning of each FF game and so did a lot of status effect white magic spells. The majority of the time they never even worked on the enemies that would be more beneficial to use them on.
I heard you can provide some of these to your party members from a playstation access video as well. So even if Noctis has abilities that far outweigh the need for some spells, you can give the leftovers to your party members.
There was an item mix that mentioned an extra EXP bonus when used with magic in that playstation access video too so it's got multiple different uses.
