"Ahead of the September news conference, Sony has cut production of PlayStation 4 to adjust inventory, people familiar with the matter said. Several major e-commerce websites in Japan, including Sony’s own e-commerce site, said the PlayStation 4 was out of stock.

PlayStation 4 sales have been weaker in Japan than in the U.S. Data from videogame magazine publisher Famitsu showed sales of the console in Japan have been declining slightly in recent weeks. Nevertheless, stocks of the device are likely to run out as the company limits production.

“The white model was gone two weeks ago and we just sold our last black model in stock,” said the chief of the videogame floor at a major electronics store in Tokyo. “Our central purchasing department warned us we wouldn’t get any for now because the item is simply not in distribution channels.”

They haven't been declining from what a shortage is or new console, (I think the ps3 went to like 5,000-1,000 and same with the 3DS), and again I need sites to actually say sold out and reports from stores listing sold out (I still seen much evidence to say that has not happened yet), but hey now it might be happening "we just sold out", and also I guess this week we will have huge decline if that is true. Poor Tales scarficed for this shortage.

Shortages started this past weekend at some places. Retailers predicted stock problems for PS4 by the end of August because they expected to clean out inventory by these dates. We're at the end of August, so their predictions and fears were correct. 

We have some evidences again, about how shortages started. For example, this forum beloved Comg, just check their twitter:

For the ones who don't know japanese, on Sunday 21st, they reported that PS4 shipment was close to be sold out, they had left 1-2 systems per store (since they have 14 stores, that means 28 units at best).

Yodobashi Camera, one of the biggest chains of Japan, still has stock on most of their stores. PS4 is sold out in Yodobashi Shinjuku, Yodobashi Nagoya, and Yodobashi Sapporo, low stock in Yodobashi Niigata. The other 18 stores still have units left.

Still, other retailers as GamesMaya reported on Thursday 18th, that Tales of Berseria moved PS4 hardware and actually sales increased.

In other words, Stock problems started to become a problem this weekend at some places, as WSJ reported. But probably, overall sales for PS4 will be higher this week than the one before, if it's true that Berseria was moving hardware. 

Real stock problem week should be the one on we are now. But at the same time, since Monday the new PS4 Slim version became "official announced" by WSJ, that means that even without stock problems, people should refrain to buy PS4 anyway because the new model is coming. The ones who will buy PS4 the following days are just uninformed people.

To summarize:

- Tales of Berseria moved PS4 hardware

- Some stores had lack of stock the same weekend

- Shortages are spreading all over Japan as we speak, still, PS4 demand should slow down after "the announcement"

So just so everyone is not confused, the shortage will effect this week, and have not been effecting the last week and the week before that?

The white model has allegedly been sold out for two weeks now at most locations so that definitely had an impact.

Specific model being sold out, does not necessarily mean an actual shortage, color models can be phased in and out like that. DS had models constantly phased in and out, don't think I would go cry shortage everytime that happened. Given I don't think I am a fan of the word shortage used so easily, either software or hardware. 

The amazing thing is that people still believes those are wonderful numbers.

There are only 2 colors for the PS4 in Japan so if one is sold out that means half of the supplies is sold out assuming they have the same shipment. And there might be some stores that only ordered white models for all we know so for them the PS4 has been sold out for two weeks now. Shortages don't have to be nationwide to have an impact on sales. It happens progressively before it becomes what it is now. It's as the word implies: "a deficiency or lack in the amount needed, expected, or due". So we have the confirmation now that the PS4 has been seeing shortages for the past two weeks. I didn't blame shortages last week and this week because we didn't have confirmation but now that we do I don't see why it should be overlooked.

I don't think it was ever 50/50, the black model always felt like the standard and still will be based on all leaks so far, maybe someone from Japan can comment like Hiska about past weeks. (Wait is HIska from Japan?, or someone who was following it closely).
