Forums - Gaming - Your Take On Cinematic Games?

Tagged games:

Gameplay > Story > Sound and Music > Graphics, exactly for me. But nobody is right or wrong, it's a very subjective topic. Play what you like, enjoy it.

its just a bunch of forum goers upset that their genre of choice isnt doing as well as they want. Numbers show alot of people like these kinds of games.

So nothing. You are right. Everyone else is just wrong. Story comes first. An awesome gameplay is meaningless without a good story to support it.

Problem comes when the entire industry seems to be transforming into hollywood and forgetting the importance of good gameplay in favour of that cinematic feel, leaving its personality behind because is deeply complexed of itself, they want to be like movies because movies are considered something of more value and more mature than simple videogames, and I don't support that vision, good gameplay has been, is, and it will be, the heart of videogames, I do, however, think there is a place for this kind of games, variety is good, just wish most of them weren't so terribly poor when it comes to cinematographic and writting values as that is most of the reason of its existence, but some others do it mostly right.

That's complete bullshit, following that logic games wouldn't even exist.

I freaking love cinematic games, that's the very same reason I got plenty of PS exclusives. Uncharted, Until Dawn, Ratchet and Clank and even Infamous has some cinematic aspects. I also enjoy seeing more cinematic cutscenes in RPG's like in Dragon Age Inquisition and the Witcher III

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Everyone likes to have their hands held every once and a while I guess. I mean, I don't like it in my games, but some people do,

Just because a game is cinematic doesn't mean it holds your hand. Ignorant comments like this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about.

I disagree with that considering some games stories are better than movies. Especially better than todays movies thats for damn sure.

Yeah I agree. I like cinematic games and love a good story. After reading books and watching movies for over 20 years I'm loving how games today can tell a story in such unique way. Take your avatar for example, great games with good storytelling and script, I'd say Max Payne 3 is one of my all time favorites. The movie? Omfg..

Lol yes I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with you on this one.

Random question, guys. Could you define what a "cinematic game" is? Because I'm fairly sure there's no universal agreement on it.

I'm saying it because if you say "games that emulate cinematography", the there's a bunch of universally-accepted cinematic games that aren't cinematic games, then. If you say "games with scripted sequences that makes it look like a movie", then a bunch of non-cinematic games would then fit into that category.

The problem here is that I think everyone here has a different opinion on a subject whose definition is user-sensitive.

I don't think there is a wrong way to make a game. People simply have different tastes. Some like narrative to be dominant, some like mix, and some like minimalist to no narrative.

I can enjoy Steins:Gate, a Visual Novel, in a very different way can enjoy a Mario title. Sometimes I like to relax and get absorbed in a story and other times I just want the joy of running around with tight controls.
