Forums - Nintendo - MCV: Zelda, Mario, and Pokemon games due out for NX within first six months

One of Wii U's biggest handicaps was its painfully slow start; it didn't get its first true system seller until a year and a half after launch, and by then it was too late.

NX needs to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders; if it's plagued by the same Saharan game droughts that crippled Wii U, then it will fail. Ideally, either Mario Kart 9 or Splat2n should be their holiday tentpole for 2017.

The problem is, Nintendo keeps saying "oh, we've worked hard to make sure that this time we won't have game droughts like our last system", yet it keeps on happening.

A big part of the problem is effectively having to support two consoles (yes, Nintendo portables basically became their own consoles the moment they needed to have their own Mario Kart, 2D Mario, 3D Mario, Animal Crossing, Smash Brothers, etc. done by the main EAD teams).

Now that that issue is put aside, they can probably have a lot more software ready. Taking Zelda: BoTW from the Wii U basically gifts them a free big launch title too.

When looking at Mario 3D Land vs Mario 3D World, and then Smash Brothers for both WiiU and 3DS, it was clear their next move was a single platform.

This will save them some development time. But may also reduce some extra sales (people who would buy all titles).

No way you get a new Pokemon game for NX unless it is a spinoff.

And given that Nintendo has struggled with both the 3DS and Wii U in launching their systems without much in terms of system selling launch line ups with the 3DS being able to right the ship while the Wii U fell down a shaft, it seems to have instituted the drought on the last days of the Wii U and presumably the 3DS, so their main teams can work on bringing software to the NX.

Also people shouldn't get too hype up about such a launch line up, technically since the GC, every Nintendo system within the first 6-12 months have had two of the three (if not all three) major franchises.

I wonder if that Mario game is a Mario Maker port. Miyamoto made it kinda clear that the next 3D Mario game won't be out until holiday 2017 at the earliest.

Actually Miyamoto wasn't clear at all especially because Nintendo rarely says something so soon in advance like next 3D Mario will definitely be at next E3 or definitely will not be there, also Miymoto never said holiday 2017.

Mario 3D World was finished in 2013, I personally expect to see new 3D Mario at NX reveal and definitely is 2017. game in any case.

New Zelda, new 3D Mario and Pokemon are killer launch line up in just 6 monts, and no, Wii U didnt had nothing similar in its first whole year.

Great lineup, of course those game want be only Nintendo games in 2017, we could easily see some other games like Pikmin 4 or Luigi Mansion.

He didn't say holiday 2017, but the holiday season is when 3 out of the 4 last 3D Mario games have come out. I don't see it at launch or as a summer title.

I do think in planning the NX launch Nintendo has expressly made sure that this time they have a big time for 1-3 months after the launch period.

They basically are getting a "free" launch by taking Zelda: BotW from Wii U, that will keep Nintendo fans happy/excited for the immediate launch month-to-six weeks.

The dreaded Nintendo drought is the period after this immediate launch though.

I think for this period they already have a game ready to go, so that's why it won't have the same fate as the 3DS/Wii U launches.

What I'm thinking is that the "big" game that normally would've launched the NX (Mario Galaxy 3, Splatoon 2, or whatever) basically now will come 1-3 months after launch instead because they have Zelda: BoTW which takes care of launch (thanks Wii U).

They better got a full first year line-up ready to go. Looking at their overal market presence, they cannot fail in that first year.

The NX will be made or broken in that first year. It's on like donkey for the NX.

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

That doesnt mean nothing, almost every Nintendo console expect 3DS was launch in holiday season also, game could easily be launch title, or for instance May title or even September title, doesnt need to be at all summer title, also regardles this rumour game could easily be holiday game, in any case new 3D Mario will be out next year.

It'll be a new Mario, I'm pretty sure. EAD Tokyo's main Mario team has not released anything since 2013 ... that will be 3 years on this November (Captain Toad was done by the smaller B-team). They are overdue for a new Mario.
