I actually like the comment on it being a “historic task”. People seem to forget that the letting in millions of refugees isn't something done to improve Germany's prospects, its done as humanitarian task.

I wouldn't for a second care to criticise German citizens for being opposed to it (I would probably be), but looking at the bigger picture Merkel is doing the right thing if you actually care about the well being of human beings as a whole, not just those of your nationality. I feel like sometimes it comes to larger bodies to act selfless in a way that the average citizen might not. i.e welfare etc.

My only critique is that the German people should have a say on the matter, they do live in Democracy after all. Clearly the next election is going to give a lot of power to the extreme right.

Out of all the tragedies that exist, and have existed long before the Syrian war, why do we only now care about the most impactful and most immediate way to help out?

Ending the conflict there and exerting more pressure on the parties that are dragging this out would be the best solution. A lot is being done for the conflict in Syria, but most of what's done is draggin the mess out and everyone is pushing their agenda.

Helping Lebanon and Jordan, the two Arabic countries that are constantly taking refugees, by all possible means, is a better solution than moving the refugees to where they least belong, is also a better solution.

European governments must learn from the failings of France and take measures to prevent terrorist attacks. Hard-right political parties in France will gain lots of votes and the leftie French President will be kicked out in a landslide defeat.

People should really stop doing as if this is an obvious decision. Among the million refugees, there most definately are several thousand who would have faced severe consequences in their home (there are more than a hundred thousand syrians that got killes in the war, last year); which ones, is extremely hard to distinguish.

The current policy is most definately saving more lives than it is causing deaths; one has to weigh, how many foreign lives is a german life worth?

That's not true. Where I work, we have multiple Poles that don't speak Norwegian, and the one I work with the most, a Bulgarian woman, is perfectly capable of making herself understood, but with a broken accent. She's still a better worker than probably any one else that work here.

You don't learn a language by sitting on a school bench. You learn it by using it in day to day situations. Except they never are in those say to day situations because they aren't allowed to work before they get their apllication approved (regardless of how well they speak the language), and they also don't have circle of non-refugee friends because like I said, the workplace is the average person's most important social arena.

We've also had a Belgian exchange student who lived with us for a year (we were the host family), do you think he learnt Norwegian by taking those two classes each week? No, it's because he was placed in a classroom with no choice but to learn. Bam, two weeks and he knows enough Norwegian to get by, and the learning only goes exponentially further upwards after that.

If we are able to get these refugees into the work force so that they can contribute to the value creation in the west, they'll be an immense resource, especially because the part of our population that are elderly is exploding (look at Japan. That's where every western country will be in a decade.)

Almost 2 weeks ago they had to scrape nearly 10 children off the pavement in Nice... After one of these poor immigrants decided he would kill nearly a hundred people. If ever Germany needed concentration camps....
