Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Only Gets About 10% Of Money Spent on Pokemon GO

10% of the from the game... not much but they have earned 10 billion in stock money

Is not a 10%, they own 1/3 of the Pokemon Company, they also own another company that owns a part of the pokemon company and they have also invested in Niantic. They're probably getting a 25 -30% or more.

Nintendo doesn't really need the cash to be honest, though I think in the future they will just cut Niantic out of the picture and self publish the game themselves. They hold the trademark for Pokemon too.

The big cash in for Nintendo on this is likely from the rise of their stock ... Nintendo and Nintendo employees own a huge chunk of Nintendo stock, so as that rises, Nintendo is basically making a ton of money.

so they get 20%
not bad at all for a joint venture

Still good money.

Annoying how the apple store gets 30 percent. Not like they do anything special by putting the game in the store.

You know apart from allowing access to several billion iOS devices that is.

Isnt it over 20%? They own 33% of pokemon company

In total, Nintendo owns 43% of Pokemon (this is insider data that I probably shouldn't be sharing, haha).

So:

30% Apple

30% Niantic

30% Pokemon -> 13% Nintendo

10% Nintendo

=

Nintendo gets 23% of the revenues from Pokemon Go, excluding dividends from their investment in Niantic.

Hm, for some reason I thought they owned 51% of PokeCo.

I'm shocked they only own one third. Don't see why they didn't buy the entire company.

The Pokemon Company is a company to simply the ownership structure of Pokemon.

It's owned by 3 other companies

Gamefreak owned by the guy who invented pokemon

Creatures owned by the guy who funded the first pokemon game

Nintendo who published the first game

Nintendo wasn't able to buy the other two out because the guy who invented Pokemon and owns Gamefreak and the guy who financed Pokemon and owns Creatures where smart enough not to sell especially as they get the majority of all the non video game related profit of Pokemon merchandise as there companies actually make it rather than just publish like Nintendo does.

Honestly if Satoshi Tajiri (the inventor of Pokemon) didn't look to Shigeru Miyamoto as a friend and mentor he may have self published the followup Pokemon games and cut Nintendo out entirely.

One thrid of 30% is 10% of the Pokemon company's share (though they don't directly as that will be funneled into future Pokemon endeavours rather than go back to Nintendo directly) Nintendo also owns a small part of Niantic.

You're correct.

For those who are confused, it's like this:

Nintendo directly owns 32% of the Pokemon Company

Nintendo owns 35% of Creatures Inc. -> Creatures Inc. owns 32% of The Pokemon Company -> Nintendo indirectly owns 11% of The Pokemon Company

=

Nintendo owns 43% of The Pokemon Company directly and indirectly

30% of revenues from Pokemon Go go to The Pokemon Company, so Nintendo indirectly benefits from 13% of revenues of Pokemon Go (but they'll most likely just get reinvested into Pokemon)

In addition, an extra 10% of revenues go directly to Nintendo

=

Therefore, Nintendo benefits from 23% of revenues in total, excluding their small share in Niantic and the dividends they may accrue.

This ownership structure of Pokemon is fascinating.

Could any of the parties involved split from the other? Could Game Freak walk away from Nintendo?
