Forums - Gaming - No Man's Sky - Multiplayer And Concerns

In an ideal situation, there would be a multiplayer mode. However, for the multiplayer mode to make sense, it might even have to be an MMO, and that's just out of question. It probably wouldn't require enough interaction between players for it to make sense to be an MMO, but on the other hand in a galaxy so large, randomly running into other players would probably be too unlikely if there weren't as many players as in an MMO. I guess it might be able to get around this problem by using something like in Dark Souls though.

And then there's the issue where players are often jerks, so running into other players would be quite problematic in a game where you basically lose everything if you die. That's not so bad if the game is designed around dying, but I get the impression that No Man's Sky isn't such game. Sure, you can keep playing if you get defeated, but defeat sounds like an exceptional state instead of something that's expected to happen again and again.

Personally I don't think adding multiplayer support would be worth the huge effort. It's just so easy to get it wrong in a game like No Man's Sky. If the devs have an idea about how to get it to work, then by all means, I'm fine with it, but as it is, I actually don't even want multiplayer in this game. It'd be relatively easy to add something like a combat multiplayer mode, but in a game about exploration, that makes very little sense and would feel tacked on just for the sake of multiplayer.

I want the multiplayer. Why won't people realise its better to have options?

Yeah, I know right. Like in Skyrim, lt didn't have MP and I felt sometimes how cool it would be to be running around with my mates in dungeons completely removing the suspence from the situation.

I do have a little bit of a concern it will be repetitive and not live up to expectations but what I've seen enough to want this game.

My other concern is that Hello Games is small team and the only other games they've made is Joe Danger. Although Joe Danger is a great game, they don't have any history in making games with huge scope or even games in this genre. Will this effect the quality and will there be teething problems making something completely new?

But I do have faith in Sean Murray and I believe that they can make this work.

Many games can seem that way, I mean fighting games in essence are the same, sure lots of character to play but really, it's just 1 2 minute over and over again. There is only so much people do in Minecraft but their own imagination has pushed it to be one of the most successful games of all time.

Maybe it will be repetitive and not live up to a lot of expectation but just because a studio hasn't produced many games is no reason to dismiss them. They are experienced game developers and that's all that matters. Many modern studios are filled with people who got experience from other places and want to develop on their own. Dontnod are a good example, former Ubisoft and EA people who made Remember Me and Life Is Strange, 2 vastly different games but both well received.

Hmm, pie.

I want the multiplayer to be similar to a souls game where you can either assist or troll other players.

Looking at the game, I'm not sure I'd want to play it multiplayer, at least not right away I'd rather just explore at my own pace and get immersed so for me I'm glad they've focused on a single player experience.

I'm not all that concerned about it becoming repetitive, I've put so many hundreds hours into games like Minecraft, Terraria, Starbound, so I'm sure I'll get enough out of it before it gets to that point, if ever. I'm not really concerned about the game, moreso the expectations of the community around it and whether at this point that can be met, it'll either be met with hostility or wonderment I'm not sure there'll be a middle ground.

I'm not dismissing anybody, it's a concern. This is what the thread is about afterall.

I think I put it across well enough that this game can work. NMS has been on my radar since first reveal and I'm pretty hyped for it but I'm not going to blindly pretend that this game is definitely going to be amazing and there is zero possibility that it wont live up to its hype.

Surprise, the first comments are all negative.

I guess I should start taking these threads for what they mostly are: people stating their opinions, and seeing who agrees with them.

Maybe I'm old school, but I've always gone into an unfamiliar game with excitement. I never think "oh man, this isn't a straight forward FPS? It must be garbage". Isn't something new WORTH checking out every once in a while? Why immediately assume the worst all the time?

This thread is about concerns for NMS, what were you expecting?

My concern is the lack of content it might have, there is only a couple of developers (less than 15 devs) working on this game. Its already technically ambitious. Is it worth the price? who knows.

I don't exactly enjoy reading people's wishes for this game, they only remind me on why we can't have nice things, cause they demand things we had 10 years ago and would be better off playing Gta online instead. What is the point with new games if all we want is the same shit we always played.

My concern with the whole game concept is, that it will get boring really fast.

Pretty much my thoughts as well, the gameplay videos just look uninteresting already, doing this for thousands of hours seems like torture.

Don't get me wrong, I agree but not because of the studio who are developing it. I too feel like I'll start flying around and then think.... 'Okay, now what?' but I think that comes from the lack of direction and PR the game had in early stages. They rarely talked aboutwhat you were supposed to do while talking about the scope of the game instead. Ambition of it instead of the gameplay of it. This was concerning.
