Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo: We May Develop A Controller For Smartphones

Thought this was a little bit of an eye raising statement from Nintendo's Q&A, Shinya Takahashi (Director/GM of Nintendo EPD) when asked about having "action" (probably meaning "regular" Nintendo games) on smartphones which wouldn't work well enough with just touch controls:

Physical controllers for smart device applications are available in the market and it is possible that we may also develop something new by ourselves. On the other hand, I believe Nintendo's way of thinking is to look at whether action games are really not impossible (without a physical controller for smart device applications) to create and how we can make it happen to create such a game. I think we will make applications, and not just action games, in consideration of what best embodies "Nintendo-like" applications, including applications for everyone from children to seniors.

Was expecting a flat out "no" to that question, but interesting that they have thought about making a controller for smartphone games.

I have no worthwhile comment to make.

I honestly think Nintendo is considering having the mobile market replace their handheld business and just combining their current handheld/console businesses into one with the NX with some kind of unified library.

The problem with smartphone controllers and the mistake that most companies make is they make them too bulky/big.

You don't need every button there anyway, even just a directional input (a small joystick, dpad, or trackball) would make a lot more games a ton more playable on a phone, add in just two buttons and you're cooking.

Very interesting. Perhaps NX will have some sort of interactivity with smart phones?

I just can't see anything like this ever being successful

For a second, I mistook it as a Smartphone controller for a Nintendo console, rather than a controller for a Smartphone..

This does make a lot of sense then, since Nintendo likes to make a lot of peripherals and extras for their systems, but at the same time, Nintendo rarely creates anything for other devices

This would make a lot of sense if they intend to use cell phones as their portable business. You might have to own an NX to play games on the phone.

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

They can also hopefully make a PSP Go style portable running the NX OS and with smartphone capabilities.

They should do it.
