Steam has encouraged people to do more PC gaming and most of them are using Windows 10 now. So its not crazy to assume MS benefits from Steam even if not from direct profits.

Windows store isn't just a games store.

Even if gaming on PC didn't exist 95%+ of Windows 10 machines would still exist as they are mostly used for productivity, work, media etc. Not gaming. If Steam didn't exist Microsoft could also be in a position to be THE distributor of games on Windows, getting all that cash Valve is currently rolling in. Steam going under or being acquired by Microsoft would be the best possible thing to happen for Microsoft in terms of PC gaming.

As for the Windows Store I don't know how many actually use the thing...

They can't purchase Steam. Valve is a Private Company.  I think that Gabe will not sell Steam when they are growing so much every year and Microsoft don't gave a damn about this in the beggining.

Yes Steam cornered MS in PC Gaming and Sony cornered them in Console Gaming. It doesn't matter if they're using a Windows machine to play games, Microsoft still make no money from those games unless they are published by themselves, they make no more money from a PC gamer then they would make from a PC owner who doesn't game. Not to mention Windows 10 was free.

Microsoft are cornered by Steam because it would be an almost impossible task for them now have the defintiive games platform on PC. Valve are rolling in cash by sitting back and watching almost ever developer release their title on Steam. The Windows Store will never be able to achieve that now.

Windows store isn't just a games store.

Never said it didn't but in terms of marketplace for games software they have been obliterated by steam and remain stuck in a corner they're desperately but unsuccessfully trying to get out of.

Sony already allows cross-play with PC. Rocket League is like that, FF XIV, etc. The real question is cross-play with Xbox, something that doesn't happen right now.

A) Sony has always allowed third-party developers to implement cross-play between all platforms.  It's Microsoft who has always turned it down.  Developers for Final Fantasy 14 and War Thunder have made statements to that effect in the past.

B) Selling your own products in your own store only is not "anti-consumer".  That's a silly level of entitlement.  Businesses have the right to survive and they have the right to sell their products where they wish in a free market.

Didn't Sony want open online gaming last gen but MS refused because 360 was gaining a lot of momentum?

If that's the case then Sony shouldn't listen to MS now just cause XB1 is at a disadvantage. But im sure MS is trying to play this as being 'good guy' now.

I dont think they have been obliterated by Steam, because I dont think they ever really tried to compete. GFW and Windows Store so far have been half assed. They were/are okay for playing some games, but MS hasnt gone at Steam at full force.

Let me put it this way, they never competed with Steam like they have Sony/Nintendo. You cant disagree with that, its a fact.

Why? MS is already in the PC market and make billions there. Dominating the PC gaming market STILL isnt a priority but clearly they want Windows Store to grow. Windows Store isnt just a games store, people forget this.

Lastly, Windows Store could potentially thrive without competing directly with Steam. Its just an app, not an expensive box.

Don't we all want to encounter 'hackers'? (not!!!) So, yeah, Microsoft's is a great idea.

I don't think anyone is going to seriously say that Microsoft moving Xbox over to PC is because they're suddenly "pro-consumer", not unless they're trying to play the 'console warz' game. They're doing it purely because they want to make more money.

Otherwise, their games wouldn't be Windows 10 exclusives and they would be publishing on Steam, Linux, Apple, and Playstation. That would be "pro-consumer", not trying to force people into an upgrade and into a terrible UWP framework.

But didn't you know? "Pro-consumer" is actually just a buzzword PC gamers use. If they can play it, then it's pro-consumer; if they can't, it's Anti-consumer
