I would really like to see a piracy-proof redesign ... now that would be a great first step in the 10 years lifecycle ;)

More likely the first step toward a new handheld.

True , maybe that would be the best decission to make , but they could still try and make the software sales rise a bit :)

Sadly, though, that's pretty much impossible

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Yeah I know , that would mean they should redesign almost the entire tech ...

10 years is reasonable if that means PSP2 comes out at year 6-8. And I think that is what they are hinting at. The PS3 connectivity will go a long way.

The GBA did the SP which was a quantum leap forward. The PSP could do something similar next. Make it like a slider or flip phone, better screen, longer battery etc.

A PSP2 could easily do only slightly upgraded graphics using a chip that is compatible with PS2 roms downloaded from the PSN store and backwards compatible with PSP games. It could have 8-16 gb internal flash memory. They don't need to push the graphics as the DS2 will probably be gamecube level at best.

Really all the PSP2 needs is two thumbsticks, maybe a touchscreen as well for browsing music, movies, etc. They can make something that will be built around PS2 level graphics but make it easy to program for. They need to add the maximum user interface options they can so developers have options to go after consumers. Pure processing power is a nice thing, but theres only so much developers can do with it, especiall with 2 triggers, a dpad, one thumbstick, and your standard 4 buttons.

Motion sensing, touchscreen, ease of development, and ergonomical design. Its not going to have that one huge hit title because all efforts are needed on next-gen home consoles. If you can't win that way, win with massive amounts of smaller but more fun games. Patapon was one. Make the games cheap, fun, and portable and you've got a win.

I don't see the PSP having a ten-year life cycle.
With these software sales me too.

Small-scale madness is: believing that doing the same thing over and over again will get you different results each time.

2 + 2 will never equal 3, no matter how many times you expect it to.

Large-scale madness is: believing that doing the same thing over and over again will get you the same results each time.

2 + 2 = 4, until it doesn't because you're not working in a base larger than 4 any more.

Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

Agreed.
Also, I just shake my head at people in this thread talking about adding technology to the console, even copying Nintendo stuff, like that will spur interest in the console. Really...
This is madness. Seems like some people can't see failure unless they see it 10 times, or won't ever see the failure.

Is it just me, or is Sony obsessed with ten year life cycles now.:)
