Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Wants to Create a Future Without/Beyond Generations.

As a PC gamer I don't care, I don't think consoles particularly hold back gaming, but I know why this rubs console dudes the wrong way unless they're Xbox drones.  I've always thought there's no money in console hardware for MS and Sony.

It's ok. Sony said that generations aren't going away.

Some people think that goinig the "smartphone way" is going to make generations go away. Everything will share the same OS.
The latest iOS (9.3.2) is compatible back to iPhone4S/iPad2. That is four and a half year. Apparently it has problems working with the oldest iPhone.

The new iOS10 coming this fall will drop compatibly with iPhone 4S!

True but still better and longer than what we have now

I don't know why all of a Sudden Console Generations are a bad thing, it seems that people want to get rid of them.

I think it's because some people are just probably tired of the status quo. Few things in gaming are as predictable as the console market. It's a cycle that's repeated itself six times over the past 30 years. A shift away from the current paradigm is thus appealing to those who want to see a big change just to see a big change. But the console cycle works, it has good reasons why it exists, and there's no indication that it's going to up an stop existing. Some people predicted last generation was going to be the final generation, yet here we are. Now some are saying this one will be the final generation, or are at least hoping it will be, but it's not happening. Mark my words: we'll start hearing about the PS5 no later than 2020, assuming it hasn't already been released or at least announced. What MS does remains to be seen, but assuming they decide to stay in the console market and the Scorpio has at best the effect of a decent price cut for a few months to a year before the "Xbox One family" as a whole enters terminal decline, we should see them announce an Xbox 4 as well, probably no later than 2020 as well.

I think that the console Generations are good for the companies and is a protection for the Consumer, that they will receive support for Several years.

The money that people intend to spend in Gaming is much lower than the money for something that bring Status like a Iphone, or a 30K TV.

One of the problems with "ending" the generation cycles is the stagnation of IP which is a problem on the various smart phone markets currently. Each generation allow developers to try something new and since it was a new start the title wasn't crowded out by me too titles and the already existing library, and marketing for new IPs is tricky since you can possibly loose a lot of money just developing the title and then on top of it sink a lot of money in marketing and have it flop would be disastrous for both the developer and the publisher. So doing some thing new at the begining gives it "self space" and more customer awareness of the title without the need to market the tile.

iPhone 4s will continue to get games and Apps even if it doesn't receive iOS10.

Most, if not all, Apps continue to be compatible with the last 2 or 3 iOS major releases. So the iPhone 4s still has 2 years of being perfectly usable after the release of iOS 10.

Not to mention, mobile processors saw a huge jump in perfomance since the iPhone 4s, these perfomance gains are about to slow down and smartphones of today will be usable for much longer.

I just want generations to be no more than five years, and no less of course.

So in the past week we've learned a conference is only good if it shows release dates (most will be delayed anyway) . that generations are a hated thing, 4k is a rip off, specs matter and specs don't matter.

Sure they do. But what do consumers want?

Microsoft throws marketing out the window.

This is the kind of move that will contribute to the end of console gaming as we know it. The consumer confusion is going to mirror the 80s collapse.

Nintendo might be the only one left after this. It only makes me think that MS is trying to destroy the console industry.
