Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on NX: "For us it's not about specs"

It goes beyond that though. Simply slapping Animal Crossing, Mario or Pokémon on an Xbox isnt going to make it sell 3DS numbers in Japan. Likewise, it probably isn't going to do anything for them in the West either. I just don't see the kinds of games Nintendo makes selling a whole lot on other platforms (except for mobile).

Which is why it would be preferable to Nintendo possibly to enter an alliance with MS rather than by a generic 3rd party. In a partnership they could still have some design control over hardware and be able to shape things more to their liking, perhaps even keep a slice of hardware/software licensing fees.

Nintendo fans would buy it because it would in effect be a Nintendo console ... just with a ton of third party support and Halo + Forza + Killer Instinct + other Rare games.

Wouldn't be a bad fit, MS is strong where Nintendo is weak and vice versa, and MS really doesn't seem that interested in actually running a game division in the 1st/2nd party sense ... they seem to just want to create the hardware and ecosystem ... well that fits well with Nintendo because Nintendo doesn't seem to give much of a shit about creating the hardware or ecosystem per se but focusing on innovation through games/controllers.

If MS threw in some nice money hats to go with it ... wouldn't be a bad fit for Nintendo. They'd still be "special" and above other third parties, which I think is important to them. If NX flops, they don't want to be reduced to being just another third party.

I like this.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Nintendo needs Polaris 11. It matches everything they do. Low wattage, 2.5 TFs, and a good price. And if previous 'leaks' are true NX is hovering around 12GB of RAM. It'll be quite a potent little box for what it does. They just gotta price it right. Use a regular controller and sell it for $199 and you got a instant seller that is powerful enough to last a few years.

Then release the SCD and NX will be around for a long time.

Watch it be a 400$ toaster.
Idk how a company could be so out of whack. It's frustrating for longtime Ninty fans...

Whats with the surprise?
Remember people, NX was planned and announced long before we knew about NEO and Scorpio.
Back then, making a new console mid-cycle was risky enough, making it stronger without knowing if third-partys would support it AND risking low sales due to the higher price that comes with unnessecary power would have been flirting with disaster.
Nintendo was just as surprised to hear about NEO and Scorpio as we were.

Everyone thought that it would be NIntendo and ONLY Nintendo who were going to release a new Console mid-cycle. So NX obviously was designed to compete with Xbox One and PS 4 Power while being cheap enough so that people that already own a console will still consider buying it.

And tbh it is not really nessecary to match NEO and Scorpio: Both will receive absolutely 0 exclusive games, all games will be coming too PS 4 and XBox One as well thats a hard requirement Sony and Microsoft are putting up, third-parties have to do this.
So as long as NX matches Xbox one and PS 4 the specs shouldnt be much of a problem.

Also please remember that this is the the first generation in a VERY long time where the technically strongest console also is the most succesful! Remember Wii? PS 2? SNES?

specs /= success!

Also: They still havent shown anything! They could still change everything and we would never know!

The new guy.

Sorry for possible mistakes, not a native speaker!

I'd be destroyed if its a $400 potato plugged into a light socket. But Nintendo never shocks me anymore. I'd actually be more shocked if they came up with a competent system these days.

You know how to improve even further the game experience you offer Reggie ? by giving your console the horsepower necessary to make the games graphically stunning, is it that hard to realize that if you were to have a on-par console to your rivals with your regular software output you'd be dominating ?

Agreed. I miss the days when Nintendo used to compete with their hardware. They cared about having powerful consoles that would increase graphical fidelity and enhance the experience of gaming on their consoles. I feel like since the Wii, they've lost their identity and tried to corner a market/demographic that doesn't care about them anymore.

It may not be about specs to you, Reggie, but it is to your diehard fanbase and hardcore gamers that will actually buy your system at launch. I love my Wii U, but it proved (at least, in part) that you can't sell a system on just your outstanding 1st party IP. Give me a powerful system with a traditional controller and then, let your games do the talking. Get back in the game, Ninty!

It'll be awhile before I figure out how to do one of these. :P

Well nobody's expecting that NX will compete with Scorpio on power, so this isn't really strange.

Can anyone confirm if Reggies is refering to Scorpio/Neo? Because if it about those upgrades, zero worries here.
Shared library is the most important feature they need, well above any spec, but not sure on what they are going to do.

Yes, question was about competition, and Reggie said we "dont talk about TF..." referring to Scorpio announcement.

Ah, good. Good. Focus your efforts on that shared library!
