Forums - Nintendo - Zelda Breath of the wild Open world size revealed

...

YES! 78 67.24%

No, I want 24 times bigger! 38 32.76%

Total:116

Why are we still doing this thing where the size of the Open World matters and everyone goes "Oh its bigger than X" "OMG, its 2x the size of Y" . Who cares about the size of the damm map, what matters on open world games is if it is fun to explore, feel alive, have entertaining side activitys to partake on and have a main objective/story/whatever that keep you engaged in the game and the world itself.

Of course if the whole world was the size of the E3 demo it'd be a bummer but ppl give way too much importance to the overall size of the map, its not that important, in fact devs are starting to get out of controll, worlds are too big now just for the sake of it. Take Fallout 4 for isnatce, big world, packed with like 10 different interior environments repeated 500 times each... yay.

Going off of this
Twilight princess:

http://zeldapower.com/images/tp/maps/item_map.jpg

Here I used the bridge of Eldin as reference. Its width is roughly 6 times the height of Link (again assumed to be 1,80m) thus about 10,8m. The Twilight Princess map seemed to be a very detailed at up to scale representation of Hyrule therefore I assumed the 10px from that picture as the width of the bridge to correspond to 10,8m. The whole map 1536x1968px is thus 1659 x 2125 m^2, but again only about 27% of the graphic are Hyrule area. Measuring the scale on the bottom of the map leads me to the assumption that it is about 500m long.

I then let link walk quickly along the bridge, which took me about 80 sec walking (32 sec running) corresponding to about 133 metres. I measured 110 px = 119 metres. So I think I am not too far off here. I also measured some other distances and got similar results.

Xeno X's world will still be FAR larger than LoZ: BoTW.

To be fair, Xeno has to accomodate mechs.

Even if true, we are talking about a difference of 24km, to 400km. That's over 16 times the size. Even with mechs 5 times the size of the characters that's a hell of a big difference.

But you can also look at it this way. The original Xenoblade Chronicles (which there were no mechs) is 5x smaller than Xeno X, which would make it 80 km (80 X 5 = 400km), that too would be over three times the size as Legend Of Zelda: Breath of The Wild.

Just judging by the demos this is true. There are numerous mountainous areas which you will probably have to use the snaking highways to get from one location to the others. which will pad the games length, as well as walking areas as (like Breath Of The Wild) you have stamina, and your character will stop and breath heavy for a minute after running (also notice running speed is very slow comparitively).

I have no doubt both will be huge, but Xeno X big? I doubt it.

XCX still does look bigger but FF map shown off looked huge as hell.

Anywayz zelda for what it is is montrous and looks like every where you go will be something to do and that doesnt include things thats not in the overworld such as the shrines (100+). Not sure if the dungeons will be the same. All i know is death mountain will be one of the dungeons in the game. That should be obvious!

I agree, but LoZ's looked huge as hell too, and it's only 1/16th of Xeno X (if the map size they talked about in treehouse is accurate at it being 12 X bigger than Twilight Princess).

*Edit* also there are only 4 dungeons from Zelda, the shrines I don't think add anything to the game map.

It's quite remarkable how big the world will be. So long as it's populated with interesting things to do and people to meet...it's concerning that there will be no towns or villages though but it fits with the setting. Let's see how it works; the E3 demo seems like it has a good variety of things to do but it could get repetitive without direction.

There will be towns and villages. They said so in Nintendo treehouse

Just a guy who doesn't want to be bored. Also

Having a huge world to explore is cool and all, but what's more important than sheer size is content. Thankfully, judging from the E3 demo, it seems the world of Breath of the Wild has plenty to do and feels very dynamic and alive.
