We just need to wait for the reveal of the NX before this needs to be revisited.   Then again after it is released.

How is this hateful? This is legitimate speculation based on the current market and rumors.

This is just the regular XXXth Nintendo bashing thread, only purpose is to badmouth Nintendo & generate hate towards the company. How on earth can one say that a product is dead on arrival when no one knows the slightest thing about it, not even it's name... bad faith is the main ingredient in this nauseating thread. If you can't see it, then I can't do anything for you, it's like reviewing a movie & talking trash about it without even seeing it... if you find that fair & respectful, suit yourself!

These are threads typically set up by Nintendo fans who haven't drank the punch. We're legitimately worried about Nintendo's future, and we're not willing to lie to ourselves about it. Just because someone doesn't express faith doesn't mean hate, so knock it off with the "Nintendo can do no wrong" thing.

The back catalog argument is a little weak to me. If we were talking last gen, then sure. I still only own a handful of PS4 games, as much of my history with the console has been dissapointing rentals. There are a few exclusives I might pick up if I get an XBO down the line, but most of the modern crop of games are so bland I'd rather watch grass grow.

Actually, I like watching grass grow... but that's a story for another time.

I dont need to watch the Sony E3 conference, know what the neo is, know the full specs of the scorpio. Mark my words, the NX will be outdated compared to them, and its library will be extremely lacking.

VR, 4K, third parties, many exclusives, streaming and already established install bases (30M+ for XB and 60M+ for PS) by the time the NX will release, a huge libarary of games and among many other things, thats what NX is up against. and what ever their "new way to play is", the industry is headed where PS and Xbox are headed, and it wont be able to compete.

The NX, what ever it is, will be dead on arrival. the only place it can find its legs will be japan, if it has a handheld counter part

4k isn't a "thing" on consoles. The Xbox One and Playstation 4 can already play back 4k video content, just not Blu-rays.
Even if you had the power of two Neo's in one box, 4k still won't be a thing for AAA high-end games.

Consumers also don't care about hardware specs, Nintendo just needs to be "good enough" at the right price to win people over, that's how the PS4 won this round. If the Xbox One was slightly faster, but $100 more expensive, it still likely wouldn't have gained any traction either.

If Nintendo doesn't want to sell their games on PS4/XB, that's fine. Branch out into PC gaming. Soon Steam will have 150 millions users and it will continue to grow. Nintendo doesn't understand that people will still buy their consoles and Nintendo PC games since many consumers don't own or want a PC. This is a smart move by MS to port everything onto the PC too. More sales = more $$$.

If the latest statistics are anything to go by... Steam has already passed 180 million users.

Microsoft is porting things to PC to push it's own platform, to lock in customers and is actually doing terribly.

In my opinion console gaming doesn't really need to get any better or bigger visually than it already is. So to me the Scorpio is over engineered. I also think this is why Sony had decided to go to the iterative model with only an incremental increase in power rather than a generational increase. There's no need to go for a big power spike anymore, because visuals don't need to get (and can't really) exponentially better. It doesn't take a huge power boost to ensure 1080p 60fps standard in all games with 8th gen graphics, PS4 almost got there with its current specs.

If Nintendo can bring great gaming experiences I think NX can do pretty well. It doesn't need to be more powerful than what's been announced / hinted at. If Neo is closer in power to NX than to Scorpio, which seems likely, then what we might see is 3rd parties looking to optimise for the lower powered, larger install base and not really making best use of Scorpio's extra power. After all, 4K gaming is great for people with 4K screens, but most people still have 1080p screens, and that's likely to remain the case for a good few years yet.

I agree to an extent.
Scorpio would be over-engineered for this generation, but we haven't seen what it would be like with Hololens or VR yet, it might be acceptable.

I think the OP maybe on to something ...

External factors can't be argued when Nintendo is going to face an onslaught of AAA games from Sony, Microsoft and their partners plus there's the issue of current installed base along with new hardware compared to Nintendo starting from scratch ...

Even if Nintendo does a really good job fixing their internal problems they would most likely be still out of luck since they have troubles courting third parties to make tons of exclusive content much like their competitors ...

In a much more realistic scenario I don't even think Nintendo has current AAA game development figured out yet when their staff size hasn't changed significantly and it'll probably reflect Nintendo's software output once the time comes to show for it ...

Supposing if Nintendo were able to somehow start recapturing the blue ocean crowd how their going to maintain that is very important when we take a look at Kinect's short-lived success ...

Actually you misunderstood what my point was.  I meant in hindsight that's how people explained the success when they were so sure it was a failure.  They didn't, for the most part, think "it will do well, but it's going to be a fad."

Not everyone agrees it was necessarily a "fad" but that's a totally different argument that I am not willing to go into.

edit: Put in the wrong word.

fair enough, "fad" is a strong term but sales did kind of fall off a cliff

I dont understand why the Wii is considered a fad? Yes sales slowed down in its fifth year, just like every other Nintendo console. If the Wii is a fad, then every Nintendo system besides the NES was a failure.

Because the audience dropped Nintendo like a sack of cold potatoes rapidly.

Also the dramatic drop off in many/all of these casual IP ... whether Wii Fit, Mario & Sonic, Wii Party, Brain Training, Nintendogs, Guitar Hero, or Rock Band ... the drop off has been unbelievable, they went from IPs that were selling tens of millions of copies to selling like 50,000 copies in some cases.

Also things like Zumba Fitness and EA Active and uDraw which were successful on the Wii, their sequels suffered monstrous drop offs.

That is pretty much a textbook definition of a fad.

But what about the first party titles like Mario Kart and Smash which have huge attach ratio on the Wii U? Those games you listed on the Wii were a fad but the system itself sold itself quite well for a standard five year Nintendo console.
