It just makes sense if your product isn't selling great to keep the options down. To me it's clear that they are stuggling to sell 2 models. Look at the fire sales just recently just to clear a bit of space for the Slim. Look at the constant price cuts they've had to get rid of old bundles.

And of course it's cheaper to produce, it's one on the main reasons to release a mid-gen version of a console.

I dont think this will boost sales much for them.
