Primethius, you misquoted me on NeoGAF.

It was 5.2 PS4 vs. 5.3 XBO, you said it was 5.3 PS4 vs. 5.4 XBO.

And tell them that I'll give another update soon.

I'll respond to the rest of your post later when it isn't 2:30 AM.

Oh, thanks of the heads up! And let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to do when posting your data on GAF, on top of giving you full credit of course (or even not post the data if you wish).

I'm just glad you're here to provide data! Much appreciated!

Aqua,

Would I be correct in assuming that Bethesda had a similar, if not higher share of software sales ($) than Activision Blizzard in May?

Yes, they are similar. Bethesda has a smaller catalog then Activision Blizzard, but Doom's 521K with high ASPs gave the publisher a good shot in the arm (like $29-$30 million in revenue).

Another interesting macro data point you made that others should take notice of:

"Less than 20% of Packaged Software sales in the U.S. are from 1st party publishers."

This figure varies widely. It's not true for the past couple of months, but in general...it's true. An interesting trend to notice is that shares for 1st-party publishers tend to be decreasing over time with their marketshare decreasing in most months (and cumulatively throughout the years), and that 1st-party tends to gain traction in the weaker months as opposed to the Holiday months when they get quickly overshadowed by titles like Call of Duty.

Data

I am guessing high selling Yearly releases keep the top 6 3rd partys far ahead of all the others, including the 1st party publishers. Then when they release new ips with heavy marketing, the lead is only widened.

For example:

Top 10 best-selling games of 2015:

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (XBO, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
2. Madden NFL 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
3. Fallout 4 (PS4, XBO, PC)
4. Star Wars: Battlefront (XBO, PS4, PC)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, XBO 360, PS3, PC)
6. NBA 2K16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
7. Minecraft (360, XBO, PS3, PS4)
8. FIFA 16 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
9. Mortal Kombat X (PS4, XBO)
10. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (XBO, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)

Activision: CoD and CoD

EA: Madden and Fifa

Take 2: NBA and GTA V(Not yearly but shows up anyways)

Other high selling yearly releases like Destiny, WWE, EA shooters, Assassins Creed also contribute heavily.

It seems the market loves yearly releases, whether we like it or not. The only thing Sony, Nintendo and MS have close to yearly releases are MLB and Forza. Nintendo also releases a lot of pokemon most years. Small and medium developers simply make games every two years or more and don't often top the charts.

good numbers for PlayStation, and Uncharted

(Assume Microsoft is negligible and less than Sony for most months except when there are huge releases like Halo 5)

And another quote you made:

"Meanwhile in the US, the recent 2DS price drop to $79 caused sales of the SKU to jump 38% MoM in May in the US and 148% YoY."

3DS sales weren't all that bad this month because of the 2DS 148% YOY jump. Sure, they're not the greatest, but its YOY decline could have been MUCH worse given the fact that Nintendo is manuevering both the 3DS and Wii U towards discontinuation and replacement only 9 months from now.

Is it decreasing because first party publishers are releasing fewer number of retail releases or the strength of their releases has been decreasing? if we can have average unit sales of a first party title have over a 12 month period then it can give us some hint on whether it is due to the fewer releases or due to weaker releases

The threshold for the Top 10 is 80K and Ratchet & Clank definitely sold below that but not significantly.

Ratchet "not significantly" below 80k. (I personally interpret that as 70k-75k)

Aquamarine said:

Quantum Break still hasn't hit 200K in packaged software sales

Quantum Break LTD < 200k (can probably figure out a maximum number for may's sales from this as well?)

Aquamarine said:

"New software released in May made up 51% of total software sales."

^^

Aquamarine said:

The Division is the top seller for Ubisoft this month, but it didn't even come close to 80K (like not even to something like 75K) even when you INCLUDE Xbox One bundle units

February's Far Cry Primal sold just under 40K units and came in the #2

The Division < 75k including bundles, Far Cry Primal < 40k (barely)

PS4: ~$133 million software sold in May 2016 NPD (~65% marketshare for 8th-gen consoles) (+88% from last May)

XB1: ~$62 million software sold in May 2016 NPD (~30% marketshare for 8th-gen consoles) (+26% from last May)

WIU: ~$11 million software sold in May 2016 NPD (~5% marketshare for 8th-gen consoles) (-38% from last May)

Industry: $241.9 million software sold in May 2016 NPD (+18.2% from last May)

^^

We got loads of info, damn.

Aqua i don't get a think, have you 3DS numbers or not?

Just for if maybe NPD don't want you say those numbers or, if you don't have, why? Should not you have all NPD numbers?

(sorry for my english)

You realize this is an NPD thread? I'm talking about LTD US hardware totals. Worldwide it's a different story.

I always forget that they're close in the US. Well, damn I guess that PS gamers aren't really buying some games.

You're being ironic, right?

Aquamarina shared the US software marketshares for 8th-gen consoles in May and PS4 is at 65% while Xbox One is at 30%.

PS4 2015: 1189k
PS4 2016: 1344.1k

XB1 2014: 903k
XB1 2015: 982k
XB1 2016: 894.4k

Wii U 2013: 260k
Wii U 2014: 308k
Wii U 2015: 326.5k
Wii U 2016: 233.2k

Nothing to substantial, but it is interesting that the XB1 did well in 2015 while the PS4 did comparatively less well. Looks like a peak year for PS4 if it can keep up the momentum.

Jan-May has been incredibly consistant for the last 3 years, about 2.5 million each year.

Opps. I type fast and I don't always double check what i typed. I'll edit it. I meant it as "PS gamers are really buying some games."
