Forums - Gaming - Could No Man's Sky hurt the industry?

It'll be like the 'cinematic experience' crap. Some developers will follow suit and might became some sort of standard for a while and then will eventually fade.

it wont succeed tough

Not really, sure it's a massive game but it has no story and no objective as far as I know. So a lot of people feel like playing this game is pointless as it doesn't have a goal.

Very well said. I couldn't have put it any better.

This is also the reason I'm not too excited for the game. I need goals and benchmarks to really enjoy an action-adventure game like this. While No Man's Sky seems ambitious and rich in ideas, it doesn't seem to have a strong sense of purpose or direction.

Yeah, but neither does Minecraft.

I'm suprised there's so much doubt of the viability of a game like this in a post-Minecraft world. Many people don't need that sense of direction. NMS is being positioned as a toolbox of mechanics for a community to discover together. It takes a look a why Minecraft and Dark Souls are so successful, and makes a game out of that. NMS is a game about community, and I'm sure that's going to resonate with tens of millions of people.

Minecraft is a completely different beast. It's not about exploration. The end goal is creativity and self expression. That's why it's so popular. You can present yourself to the world.

In NMS there is no self expression. Everything is pre calculated, nothing your own. You can not go and say "Hey look what I discovered" because it's just plain luck and circumstance. You can't have a lasting effect since there is no consistency in the world other than the named planets and species which are ultimately pointless because for every planet and creature there are a million that are very similar.

It will be fun for the first few weeks and then again when someone reaches the center first. And that's it.

From what we know, No Man's Sky has very little story, if at all (It has Lore I think but that's about it). So a narratively impressive game would still appeal more to many than just a free roaming exploration game that utilises a procedurally generated content.

There is a goal and a story but the game itself was meant to promote exploration as well.  The story is more of  way of getting you to explore more and more dangerous regions of the galaxy and the endgame seems to be infinite in its expandablity.

Will the assets also be infinite? Or will the 10th colorful planet with dino-ish creatures get boring?

I think we will have to wait and see :).  I'm excited for it though.  Its supposed to be 40 hours to beat so if I can see a decent amount of life, travel to at least 50 different planets, dogfight in outer space, trade, explore and kill my way to the center of the galaxy, I will be satisfied.  I mean, even if the game is infinite, I'm not lol, so give me like a god 40-50 hours of exploration and mystery and I'm good.

as a guy that hasn't played NMS yet i agree that uncharted 4 is now a terrible game.

I think big exploration games are for exploration people. They're not a big crowd.

You can explore and play Xenoblade Chronicles X for 400 hours, but most people get through its story in 50 hours and move on.

God bless You.

That's some strong karate. You split boards and smahed bricks.
