Forums - Nintendo - Plot twist: (Rumor)Nvidia Tegra chip to power Nintendo’s NX handheld

Well there were rumours of NX not using X86, so if they use a Tegra chip for the handheld and a ARM cpu and Nvidia gpu for the home console the games should be easily scalable.

Hmm, interesting. Wasn't the 3DS also supposed to be powered by a Tegra chip?

If the 3DS was originally supposed to use an Nvidia chip and that had BC, I don't see why NXDS couldn't.

Obviously working under the assumption that they didn't tape BC in last minute just because they suddenly could.

I found it!

Nvidia Shield Android TV is a mini console thats basically just a Tegra X1 chip.
It uses 19.4 watts on avg. doing a medium demanding game.

Best looking games a Tegra X1 can do:

Cool, thanks for that. I wonder how much power savings they would get from shrinking to 14nm/16nm.

This was may 2015, in 18 months the power consumption is either cut down in half, of performance is doubled. Basically you could expect NX handheld fall 2017, that would realistically mean the same performance on roughly 5watts...

W T F?

You use nvidia arm+nvidiagpu for your handheld?
But you use AMD x86+amdgpu for your homeconsole?

WTF is wrong with you nintendo? isnt that going to make running the same games on both a nightmare?

If this is true, nintendo dream of a unified platform is dead.

More likely it's AMD ARM-based SoC and Nvidia ARM-based SoC.

You think going from 20nm -> 16nm FinFET will cut power usage from 20watts down to 5watts?

Thats pretty optimistic.

That was more of an extrapolation based on Moore's law for the ballpark. However, by the time NX handheld is on the market, it could be manufactured on a 10nm process.

I'm still skeptical about this rumor, but this is kinda interested, from Nvidia's CEO:

I also believe that mobile cloud in combination is one of the most powerful computing forces that the computer industry has ever known. Because of mobile cloud, we've been able to extend the capabilities and the benefits of computing to billions of people, whereas in the PC area, we were able to benefit hundreds of millions of people. And yet no one has yet created a game platform around mobile cloud, the technology of mobile cloud, the power of mobile cloud, the architecture of mobile cloud, so that we can extend gaming not to tens of millions of game console users, but billions of users. I think that that's the great opportunity. And I don't have anything to announce today, but that's what we're trying to endeavor.

So Nvidia wants to create a mobile cloud based sharing platform. Maybe they are Nintendo's partner? Because I never really thought Nintendo would be able to pull off anything like that, but if they are partnered with Nvidia ... that makes that SCD patent a little more plausible.

If nintendo is depending on the cloud to save their handhelds,... they are done for.

Cloud to assist in gameing is just pure fail in my opinion.

Its gonna to be used for crackdown 3? in multiplayer, but the cost for servers is gonna be massive, and I bet you its going to have tons of issues, and introduce weird input lag, server desync (much more often and much worse than normal) ect.

I think gameing is "healthier" and better the futher we stay away from cloud assisted computeing for it.

You say this because your analysis is based on a wrong model ...

The real cloud computing is based on a bunch of remote computers that pool their computing capabilities ... it has great elasticity in the processing of information for each of the connected computers ...
His great asset in relation to cloud computing for large data center, is the elimination of latency phenomenon that create lags because of the geographic distance ...

Then Thou bases on the Microsoft system, PRIVATE CLOUD. Microsoft wants to sell the cloud as a service.

But there is another system ... THE CLOUD COMMUNITY ,
to sell the cloud as a equipment.

The principle is simple, one of the best known is the air control, each airport monitors airspace and shares information with the rest of airports, in case of failure of some others take over ...

CLOUD COMMUNITY is based on sharing ... If Nintendo creates an OS for NX for remote computing sharing, using virtualization ... EVERY NX could become a server for other NX, Nintendo could create its own engine like "cloud engine" using 100 NX operating in cloud ... besides it's one of the strengths of the system, the more machines connected together, the more online will be stable and powerfull ...

And this is where the idea of a TEGRA X1 is interesting ... so that the
cloud community work, must work the NX 24/24 ... so a machine has low power consumption (20 Watts) would be great ...

After sharing does not mean giving ... Nintendo could very well put a "counter" in each NX , a sort of cloud mining to reward the owner of the NX who shares his machine on the network, but not in bitcoins! free DLC or discount on games via MYNINTENDO as he speaks in the SCD patent ...

Doubtful :/
