Forums - Gaming - Which version should critics review?

With this talk about New 3DS version of Hyrule Warriors and the potiential announcement of the PS4, and Ace being bored at work, it got me thinking. (Yes I refer to myself as Ace).

Which version should critics review and be critical over? How do PC reviewers review things? Why is the sky blue?

That's actually a pretty good question. I wonder the same thing.

PC reviews are usually at the highest possible end of the spectrum, but with the Neo for example the differences will be minimal, so it'll probably be around the same to review one or another version, not technical wise.
If they are to pick a pattern I wish it would goes around the basic version, as that'll be available to every single owner of the game, but also make sure to mention what it achieves at the high end as well.
Score wise, it probably won't change a thing, as it's not a technical review system we take as scores, but a subjective personal opinion with a number choosen to represent it.

Well I do mean that it is some what noticable in this hypotical situation, like lets say Ubisoft game (Since you know it is gonna be them, if anyone), which somehow with the increased frames and better resolution is decent on the PS4.5 vs the PS4 which stutters and for some reason does not play well.

Both? They certainly could. Reviewing multiple versions of the same game isn't something that's new. I know for sure that sites such as IGN in the past have reviewed games for multiple platforms seperately if differences are distinguishable enough.

bet: lost

They should review both obviously just in case it's another situation like Hyrule Warriors 3DS.

Imagine if nobody reviewed the original 3DS version and they only reviewed the new 3DS version. A lot more people most likely would have bought a shitty version.

PC reviewers always use the best of the best.

However they show benchmarks for differnt builds, usually CPU (with highend gpu) and vary GPU setups (with a powerfull cpu).

So I could see the future reviews of games being from the PS4k.

with a minor mention of how it runs on the normal PS4.

Does it matter that much? As long as they say which version it was it shouldn't make a difference. I mean I've never seen any framerate stuff or resolution things in a review anyway. Isn't that more digital foundary or whoever that does that kind of thing?

Some companies get hit harder than others for poor frames. It depends on the reviewers, when they decide they hate game for it, and let it slide for another game.

Maybe this could be a nail in metacritic. Reviewers are reviewing so many more games because of the influx of indie games and new AAA developers. Now their workload just doubled to an extent. They would have to play both versions all the way through (yes we know they don't all do that) but this could be fatal for a reviewer's credibility in this case. The reason being is that with some games in the lesser version there could be some incredible slow down or even game breakers if they don't thoroughly check each version. There's bound to be some coding differences or moments where even the "superior suped up version" will suffer.
