I have to say I still don't really get the point from Sonys end...The PS4 is selling gangbusters and is just this year hitting it's stride really.

Why shake things up now?

current PS4 for casual gamers or children after PS4K release for core gamers who prefer better performance?

Not bad, not bad at all!
As was my intention, i'll buy day 1...

This is the important bit:

Sony seems committed to keeping the NEO and the original PS4 player bases connected. As such, there will be no NEO-only games, and Sony will not let developers separate NEO users from original PS4 players while playing on PSN. Likewise, Sony explicitly and repeatedly states that developers cannot offer exclusive gameplay options or special unlockables for NEO players—so don’t expect NEO owners to get a level editor or a special Rocket League car that you won’t have access to on your original PS4.

Well what's the point of it then? Is it just Sony is scared that NX will come out an knock it off the console graphics king perch? If devs are hamstrung to offer every game at 2013 PS4 specs then will they really put much effort into providing a fledgling userbase to make most use of the new specs?

Sony is making a big mistake of fixing a problem that doesn't.

So who is going to pay publishers to include that NEO mode, why would they bother.
Required starting in October, yeah right.

Did Giant bomb fall for some faked documents or something.

The PS4 is already the most powerful console. Does Sony really think there are enough people willing to upgrade to make it worth the risk or alienating people.

Or, even ignoring that potential snaffu, the cost of R&D and production.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

This is just a stupid idea that i STRONGLY wish that ends up being just a rumor...

Sadly, i feel that there is some truth about it and that makes me fucking angry.

Like i said, i reaaaaally hope that there is a Master Plan behind all of this, because if it is a reactionary plan because of the NX and/or the Xbox 1.5, boy oh boy.

Exactly, and exactly why I said I hope developers don't support it. How many of them will actually be sold vs orginal ps4, and how does that play out in extra development costs for a game to support this.

I really really hope this is just a whole bunch of bs. But there's been a lot of smoke and no firefighting by Sony, so you know what that means.

I doubt any of it is true.

There are many willing to upgrade, and many like me willing to either upgrade (if a good promo exists) or simply buy a second PS4.

If i just buy a 2nd one, I'll move the new one to the basement with my 4K tv, and hook my old one up to either the bedroom or the family room 1080ps.

If Best Buy or Amazon (cause fuck Gamestop) offer me the upgrade for $200 (200+ trade in)... I'll likely bite that way instead.

And yes - I would be getting this IN ADDITION to my PSVR.

I cannot believe people keep spreading these silly rumors.

Sony's goal as a company is to make a profit. Reducing the cost of your console while keep the specs relatively the same will help you sell more consoles. This lets you sell more games and more peripherals, which earns you more money (they don't make any money on the console).

Making a more expensive console is not going to help them sell that many more consoles. And I don't think this would do much to way potential XBox buyers to the Sony camp.

Someone please explain to me why Sony would spend time and money to develop a slightly faster console? How would any of this benefit Sony?

Why wouldn't they just make a PS4 Slim unit, taking advantage of current technologies to make the console smaller / quieter / cheaper? The only real upgrade they should add is HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2, to support the current generation of 4K TVs (and some people have mentioned they should upgrade the Bluray drive to UHD capable, but I still have my doubts they would do this).
